To me (and believe me I am not a seasoned artisan at this), putting multiple headstocks on defeats the purpose of these machines. It only takes seconds (literally) to change from one function to another. I understand how attractive it is having "dedicated" jobs set up, but with 2 or 3 machines you can do that for production work by leaving certain functions set up during a production run, but still have 3 lathes, saws, boring, drill presses, sanding stations. still available when other jobs come along. The jointer goes on and off in seconds (a little longer on a 10ER, but ....)

I am a professional carpenter/cabinetmaker and have a slightly smaller shop at my home I am now outfitting versus the larger space I had previously. The Shopsmith will be at the center of it , I plan to use the Mkc tools adapter to run a Bandsaw on the 10er if the purchase works out, along with an additional 10er as a dedicated drill press/mortiser.

For space and workflow reasons I would like to combine a planer and tablesaw on one carriage utilizing two headstocks, does anyone think this would be possible space wise on the carriage? I would be using the Mkc tools adapter to run the planer and the planer headstock would have an upgraded motor. I have seen photos of two headstocks on a carriage online so I know it works for two saws.

Time is of the priority as we started moving all the other stationary equipment out of the old shop (RAS, shaper, router tables. Miter saw) and I have a backlog of a few months of customer work ready to go so I wanted to get a tablesaw/planer in action ASAP rather than setting up my install truck portable tablesaw/planer in the shop and having to move them every time I need to go out on an install.
Can we assume you mean jointer and not thickness planer? If so, the jointer and table saw are designed to run on the same headstock at the same time on the mark v. If you mean thickness planer, I can't imagine trying to fit that, a saw blade and 2 headstocks on the same unit.

By planer, I assume you are referring to the 2.5" jointer that utilizes the shaper fence that mounts in the table insert slot.

If so, it would require two headstocks and two carriages. They should be mounted so as to share the same operator side.(normal orientation - quill facing right).

I leave it for those who have a 10 set up to provide the dimensions(headstock, carriage, available way tube length).

Since it is intended to be a permanent setup, the way tubes can be made longer by mounting them with no extension beyond the castings(no need for tailstock etc.).

I don't think there is an easy way to run a SS mount thickness planer on a 10ER. The thickness planer has indentations on the bottom to sit on and clamp to the MK V way tubes. The 10ER way tubes are closer together than MK V way tubes. Also the center line of the 10ER spindle is about 1/2" closer to the way tubes than the MK V.

All other MK V SPTs will run on the 10ER using the original Magna A and B adapters or the MKC Tools adapter. As for the Magna adapters, if you ever see one or both grab them pretty much no matter the price. They are just about impossible to find. Particularly the B adapter.

John,

That was exactly the info I needed, thickness planer was what I was intending to run, the only place in the shop I have enough room to run long stock is dead in the center so having the tablesaw and planer side by side as well as a bandsaw on an end of the shopsmith would be ideal but I'll have to wait a bit on that I guess.

There is a shopsmith planer for sale as a stand alone tool on Craig's list right now so perhaps I can get the guy down to a reasonable number on it and deal with less than optimal layout until I get a Mark V. I currently have a foley belsaw molde/planer in the shop but would prefer to leave it for just molding duty especially as it can only plane 8" wide.

Gotta love the planer. I love my pro planer, variable feed rate is crazy awesome compared to cheep planers. I would Definitely Sacrifice space for a pro planer, no regrets at all.

A stand alone SS planer with castors? Move it to the center of the shop when you need to plane long stock. I don't know how you work but when I planed my 30' X 40' shop I considered milling long stock. I don't think I cut anything over 8' other than cross cutting rough sawn planks up to 16' long and most material is way shorter.

One thing to consider about the SS planer. First, IMO it is as good as it gets for a 12" planer. I have had my Pro Planer (bought new) for well over 10 years and have never had an issue. The main point is that not all SS stand alone planers are a SS "Pro Planer" as some listings claim. SS makes a power stand to mount the SS mount planer. The difference is that a Pro Planer has a cast iron table and the SS mount planer has an aluminum table.

Also the name on the in feed shroud of the SS mount planer says "Shopsmith 12" Planer", On the Pro Planer it says "12" Professional Planer".

I like cast iron so if that is a consideration then be ware of Pro Planer adds.

As a consideration, a stand alone could be used as a SS mount when a Mark 5/V is obtained. However, I question the rationality of that. As John said cast iron. There is a reason the SS mount is not(LBS). Also the stand alone has a larger HP motor. The 1 3/4 hp motor is preferred as it can be run faster. There are early units that had 1 1/2 hp motors.

Hey John, do you know if you can mount a bandsaw on a 10ER using the Magna A adapter? It looks like it would put the bandsaw too high to couple if the adapter is mounted the normal way. But I can't tell if it would work flipped over "upside-down", mounted sorta like the B adapter. I realized just today that mounting my bandsaw on a 10ER (instead of a Power Station) would improve my shop layout considerably.
