No. Is not Luan some type of Mahogany?

A long long time ago there was 'Philippine mahogany'. Then there was lesser quality species(but similar) that could not correctly be called PM. So Lauan became the word for that 'stuff'. That is why there is so much color variation(at least one reason).

All this is AIUI, so it is quite subject to correction/elaboration.

The outer layers are Philippine Mahogany. I am not sure what the core is and the glue used to be exterior grade. If I am remembering correctly. I was introduced to it while looking in boating hardware/supply stores in Hawaii years ago. No big box stores on the island and not many lumber stores either, but that was almost 30 years ago. Not sure if it has changed significantly since then.

Lauan has also been used for years and years to make hollow core interior residential doors.
