Looking good. I'd never have known those weren't OEM Shopsmith tubes cut down to length if you hadn't told us.tomsalwasser wrote:Ain't she cute? I quickly assembled it without the wooden plugs (yet). I was very careful about snugging the clamps. The EMT bench tubes are 26-3/4" and the way tubes are 26". I plan to mount the planer on this excellent SS rolling base, which became available after I mounted my drill press on the wall. I did not cut my SS tubes so can always go back.

The 'zinc plating' is a bit of a clue.
Interesting lengths. Same as cutting a pair of bench tubes.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.

I noticed the old full length bench tubes are 3/4" longer than the way tubes so I kept it that way with the EMTs. I suppose that way the bench tubes can stick out from the clamps a bit.JPG wrote:Interesting lengths. Same as cutting a pair of bench tubes.

Way tubes = 52"tomsalwasser wrote:I noticed the old full length bench tubes are 3/4" longer than the way tubes so I kept it that way with the EMTs. I suppose that way the bench tubes can stick out from the clamps a bit.JPG wrote:Interesting lengths. Same as cutting a pair of bench tubes.
Bench tubes = 52 3/4"
Your EMT = 26 + 26 3/4 == 52 3/4 ==== cutting a single bench tube.
They are that way so they 'fit' correctly.

Re: Thin Wall EMT Way and Bench Tubes
Works out slick for a single ten foot section of EMT too. Nice deal for $12 with free cutting services.
Also, each cut end has a slight inward curl from the very nice cutter used at HD. This creates a burr inside the EMT. The burr will get in the way of a wood plug and will need to be removed. I may not bother with the plug and just see how it works out for a while. The cutter rounds over the outside of the EMT nicely, making it easier to insert. I wish my last piece had been cut on both ends. Could have if I had thought of it.

You must have one of those new-fangled zero-thickness blades that cuts no kerf.JPG wrote:Way tubes = 52"tomsalwasser wrote:I noticed the old full length bench tubes are 3/4" longer than the way tubes so I kept it that way with the EMTs. Ok, cms, but how are you going to power your planer?tomsalwasser wrote:Ain't she cute? I quickly assembled it without the wooden plugs (yet). I was very careful about snugging the clamps. Re: Thin Wall EMT Way and Bench Tubes
It looks bigger because the wall is SO THIN. Is 1 1/2" EMT that size OD? If so how can it be 1 3/4" OD? It certainly does not look like that to me. BIG difference.JPG wrote:I think the view angle makes the EMT look larger. I assume it is 1 1/2" EMT.tomsalwasser wrote:Thanks ER. Here is what I bought: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Allied-Tube- ... /100400412
Here you can see it side by side: EMT/Bench/Way
If so it is very close to 1 3/4" od.
Make sure the plugs are long enough to be under the entire clamp.
EMT is an electrical conduit. It is not designed for strength or dimensional integrity. Not even talking about the plating.

Buy a set of tubes on eBay. yes a bit more expensive and then cut them to the size you want. If I ever saw a bench with EMT tubes you would have to give it to me to take off your hands.
