No pictures yet, but I will have some soon. I was going to get the Headstock together today, but last bearing for the motor did not come due to MLK Day holiday. Pieces are all painted, just waiting for re-assembly.

I was considering making a "Access Hole" on the "A" series headstock and was wondering how some others have done this.

I center punched between the LOGO cover holes and used a 3 1/8" bimetal hole saw to cut an access hole in the "A" headstock. That the largest round hole you can cut and still get the original access cover to cover the hole. I drilled a #10 hole in the half moon at top and bottom of the LOGO cover and made a aluminum bracket that I drilled and tapped to match the half moon holes. I can slide the cover up over the hole and tighten the screws to hold the LOGO cover on the headstock. I have done this to over a dozen "A" headstocks in the past.

I finally got the remaining bearing for the electric motor, so got that together today, then put the headstock together.

Lots of trials and tribulations but I got there.

I added an access hole on the back side beneath the ShopSmith logo and it has come in handy already. I put the pork chop on without the dial behind it and did not notice until too late. If I hadn't had the hole, I would have had to take a lot of pieces off to make that right. Thanks Bill!

I am still playing with the speed control, getting it adjusted to where I think it should be, and just getting used to all the adjustments, etc.

It will be a bit yet before I start wood working with it, but I will get there.




I neglected to take some "Before" pics, so you will have to take my word that it looked a lot worse.

How did you add the hole?

Hole saw! Then I drilled the cover plate and drilled and tapped a couple holes in the headstock case for the cover plate screws.

Easiest part of the whole project. My biggest saw is only 2 & 1/2" but much better than no hole.
