SHORTY LENGTH

Recently purchased a 510 and am considering making a shorty or deputy out of it. What is the latest info on the length of tubes for using it as a drill press? I have read several but wonder, before I cut, what length it should be before I cut them off.
Had a power pro head stock but am selling it separately.

Shop Deputy, as designed by ShopSmith, is designed for horizontal mode only.

I can not speak to "what is the latest" but I can tell you what I have done. You have to determine what capabilities you want for your shorty. Do you want to be able to utilize the carriage (main table). If so, the shorty needs to be longer than some. If drill press, power station and sanding station are your only objectives, the shorty can be shorter.

I cut 16" off of the tubes to create mine. Here are some pictures of my Shorty (and my ravaged shop area).

You can see that with a drill chuck attached, there is very little clearance between it and the main table.

As Dusty says the length is determined by what you want to use it for. I cut 18" off when I made mine. In drill press mode it was a little light on the left end without an SPT installed. My wife used it for a long time to drill holes for her scroll saw projects. I used connector tubes and telescoping legs to support the table so it would not tip in case she leaned on it real hard.

Now that we have dedicated 10ER and MK V drill presses it is used primarily as a sanding station.
