Mauka, something tells me by your handle, you must
live at some elevation.
Trying to think where on da winward side.
I lived for about 3 years by Kualoa Ranch,
couple years in Waimanalo, and a year in upper
Kalihi. (Kam IV road area.)
If you ever make it to where Kam Bowl's diner
relocated, email me some Oxtail Soup.
Welcome to the club, Bra!

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.
Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.

Lover, you ever live DaKine Hawaii? Brah?
I only know 2 languages. American English, and
Hawaiian Pidgin.
Let the mountain man respond! Me, I was mostly a
Makai boy. Upper Kalihi is too low.
Besides, it is only quarter to 7 on Oahu.

Aloha Skou, friendly place this forum. Actually I live about a mile from Kailua Beach, on Kawai Nui canal. Love the ocean and the mountains.
It must be retirement, but I've been in a "joining" mood lately. Just joined the Honolulu Woodturners. First meeting last night, and the 7th Annual Symposium this weekend.
http://honoluluwoodturners.org/index.html
Working a wood lathe will be a new experience for me, although I've had a small metal lathe for some years. Very pleased that my new to me ShopSmith appears to have all the original lathe tools.
The ShopSmith fascinates me, it's been in production so long, and with minimal changes. It's well built, well supported, and can be used to build great things.
They are somewhat hard to come by here, the first one I was interested in was advertised on Craigslist by someone who ignored requests from me over 4 weeks. When they did finally respond I told them I wasn't interested anymore. I really was, but don't want to deal with people that are so unresponsive. So I set a watch, and this one came up around 11AM on a Tuesday, I called, checked it out, and I was bringing her home by 1PM.
I considered purchasing a new one, but ShopSmith quoted me up to $4,000 to ship one here here - No joke. There are enough around here that I figure someone used to bring them in. They are not really that big or heavy.
One interesting thing I found is that Lowes Home Improvement offers a number of ShopSmith parts. Mark 7 motor upgrades, caster wheel sets, and three different saw table upgrades. No complete machine, just upgrades.
Well I've rambled on long enough - I'll post my Mark V 510 reanimation progress once I reach a milestone.

Keakap where art thou? A fellow islander could use your help!
I don't get over here to the SS fori much anymore- been busy with other "stuff".
But the "Mauka" handle definitely caught my eye- that, and windward.
The 510 looks like a real beaut! And yeah, I guess that price was a beaut too!
I'll be checkin back from time to time to see if any "hands on" assistance is needed.
Good to know there's another Smither out here on the rock.
Aboout those 2 questions- I cannot answer either, alas.

WAZZUP, Brah?
Oh, since both of you live in Kailua, you COULD be some help.
(Wish I was back there!)

Update - impeller not damaged
Tested the motor briefly and then took the fan housing off and apart. Impeller is undamaged and while I could fix the "puka" in the housing I'm going to call SS first to get feel for what they charge for shipping to Hawaii. The fan housing is priced at $43.00.
Update on shipping, called and was told a shipping quote would be requested and someone would get back to me tomorrow.
I also decided to just place an order with the web site quoted std shipping of $11.00. Just to see what happens.

Update to fan housing repair
SS sells a replacement fan housing for about $55 including shipping, very reasonable. But I decided to repair my housing instead. Used fiberglass cloth inside and out, and Q-cell, which is a fine power that forms a filler when mixed with resin. Had these items hanging around the shop, but my resin had gone bad. So I used some 30 minute epoxy instead. A light sanding and coat of grey it should be good to go. Thanks!

My two sons both live there on Oahu.mauka wrote:Aloha Skou, friendly place this forum. Actually I live about a mile from Kailua Beach, on Kawai Nui canal. Love the ocean and the mountains.
They both love the pathways and the climbing as well as running on the beach. One of their latest 'Dad you need to come visit' invitations is below.
I am sure you have an amazing shop view. I am appropriately, a bit jealous.
