510 -520 saw guard

Why won't a 510 -520 lower saw guard fit on a Mark 5? It defiantly is a better design than my upgraded Mark 5 guard?

When they redid the design of the table for the 510/520 the made the leg spacing wider, like wise the carriage was made wider so there was more space and the saw guard was made bigger. The guard simply does not have room to fit on the 500.

You can use it out board for sanding, in fact they sell a dust collector which fits the 500 that is made out of a subset of the 510/520 collector system. It just will not fit when trying to use it between the legs.

There are pictures here and much more details if you care to do a search. I'm about to run out so I don't have the time now.

OK so I see they offer a Disc Sander Dust Chute #555167 which is a better design than the lower saw guard 2 piece thing I currently have,the problem with it , it has way too much open spaces allowing dust to escape.

Will it work with the saw blade?

The dust chute only works off the side of the table and is indeed a subset of the 505-520 lower guard.

I'm not sure which guard/dust collection system you have on your machine so let me say that when I got my machine new in 1976 it came with a metal guard top and bottom. It was at best clunky and while I would use the bottom part for dust collection I would most of the time just leave the upper guard off. When I grew up we had table saws and no guards so while I know that was not the path I wanted to go I still did it that way.

Shopsmith offered an upgrade to a plastic system and I jumped on it. This was a vast improvement of the upper guard and I could use it without cursing it.

The bottom part did have issues in that they had a single small hose connection and well it was not as good as it could have been. People complained and soon a retrofit came out with two small dust ports which was an improvement and life was good.

After I got my 520 upgrade I gave away my lower 500 guard and I'm glad to have helped someone else out I wish I still had it. My son got a shopsmith last year and it came with the old system and the cost of the new system is about half of what he paid for his used shopsmith. I guess as a good dad I should just get one for him but haven't done so yet.

Now if you do then from the factory upgrades have run there course. You will have to start looking at where the sawdust is coming from and try and figure ways of blocking it off. I don't recall any 500 models being shown but there are a few posts here about how people have improved their 510/520 systems and they would be a good starting point.

Now to some pictures to help understand this 500 vs 510/520 saw guard and 500 dust chute thing. I have a few pictures which I hope shows how things interfere, I'm not going to comment on them but if you have questions please ask. I have searched and the only posts that I have been able to bring up are my posts from previous posts, evidentially I am not using the right words, the search feature on this forum isn't the best. As I said in my post I have the UPDATED Mark 5 saw guard/dust chute, that uses two hoses, it does a poor job and I am simply trying to improve it. The best Idea I think would be to wrap a bag around the assembly and catch the dust that way, something that would ENCLOSE the blade like the Disc sander chute, this 2 piece design with 2 hose ports, is at best POOR.

As someone posted above I have all of the updates from the factory, so basically the only way to improve it is to make something myself or modify something newer to fit. As I say that, that is probably my best bet.

evidentially when I posted earlier, my copy paste held on to a different page other than the one I wanted. Above is the correct page. The problem is the portion of the guard farthest from the Head Stock is far enough away as ti leave LARGE gaps, thus poor chip and dust collection.See pictures.

I agree that the huge gap between the bottom of the two 'halves' is puzzling.

Afraid you are the pioneer on this.
