I got this thing basically free and I don't think it was ever used. It's like it was partially assembled then put away. Anyway, the aluminum has this salty looking stuff that will wipe off with your finger and I have no clue what it is.
Thoughts?

It is corrosion. Aluminum oxide.

Regardless make sure to salvage the idler pulleys even if you have to replace the bearings. They do not make em any more and the ones today are not very good.

When I bought a 510 for my daughter the main table and the other tables had the same spalting. My wife told me that one of her homemaking shows suggested vinegar and water, strong on the vinegar. It washed the white stuff off but I still put a coat of clear lacquer on the bottoms of the tables just in case.

What caused your is hard to tell but salt water or spray or ???? having to do with any basic salts will do it.ibskot wrote:Any idea what causes this?
As an example some many years ago I had hurt a foot and took an aluminum pan that my wife had left laying around, it was slightly used but in excellent shape. I added Epson salt warm water and proceeded to soak my foot. I noticed some water on the floor after I was finished, about 20 minute or so of soak time. When I picked up the pan it was leaking in several places. That was that, scratch one pan. And yes it happen that fast. When it was rinsed and dry it had that some look as your table does.
