Old Shopsmith Magna Light base

Hi, I'm new here and I have a VERY old unit that was given to me. All the goodies as well. It works great and it does things that I don't have other tools that can do.

Anyway, it has a "Magna" work light that was attached to the motor unit and the base is broken. It's kind of a quick detach thing that reminds you of an air chuck sort of..... Three ball bearings are released when you pick up on the outer ring. The light is great but the base has broken. The plastic piece that sticks up from the motor mount broke off. Is there anything still available to replace that thing or to adapt it to the new style multi mount? I'm sure I can fashion something but that's just another project in a long list of projects.

Thought I'd ask.

Interesting, I have never seen one like that. Can you post a picture of the light so we can see what it looks like?

Looks like a turning project. From what I can see this looks to be reasonably simple to put on the lathe and make out of nylon or similar plastic.

I've not see this type of connect on any current shopsmith hardware so it unlikely you will find it unless someone here has a spare.

As Ed said it doesn't look like anything SS but who knows. You said Magna. Does that mean a model 10 or the MK 5s made by Magna? The only light I have seen for the model 10 was made by Vimco and it had the SS logo on it.

I had not seen that one either. Most of us here are tinkerers and fabricators of sorts, so there are a number of adaptive ways to tackle this

I use a magnet for a base for a number of things and one that comes to mind for this might be a Harbor Freight 3" magnet base.

On a cast iron 10E/ER there are lots of places to stick it. It is really strong. One reviewer uses it to hold his hazard placard on his tractor, so it takes some pounding.

You can stick some duct tape on the bottom and trim it to keep it from marring painted finishes etc. Newer aluminum headstocks and you are into bolting something on.... like a steel plate etc. Or the utility light bracket.
