You said "reed".

I said "reid".

You said "really? I was on my phone".

I said "What? No caller id in T&C? yada ER."

Which part is confusing? - caller id, or T&C?

Maybe T&C is not a correct abbreviation fer thine locale?

I unnerstan the yada part even though he does not. :D

I think you got a new Mark 7. If so ed's suggestion re researching disassembly etc. would be quite helpful(you have not been in there yet).

One thing I didn't like is the sheet metal screws being so close to the cables. I added a bit of protection to make sure the screw and cables don't get together...... so if you have the opportunity check to see if any thing else could have happen to the cabling, the connectors and I'd even check the wiring and switch, the main switch to make sure all of that looks and operates normal.

Did you get the upgrade kit or the whole new headstock?

If you have never opened it up or did the upgrade I'd get started now by reading up on the what all has to happen and the few things you might need to have on hand to do the swap. The motor is heavy and knowing how to handle it is going to be an issue. Like wise the other fun stuff that will be required to access the power supply. To be honest I don't know what the manual looks like for the non-upgrade versions, do they have all the instructions needed? If not then make sure that shopsmith is planning on sending them along.

I think it would be nice to have it all apart and waiting the new power supply rather then waiting then taking it apart...........

Ed
I agree totally. I bought the Mark 7 with every thing already assembled. The OM says to pull the belt cover and blow out the headstock periodically which I have done, but I haven't gone any farther because of warranty. I am waiting for permission to do just that, and Doug Reid is working on getting me that permission and the instructions for doing it. To be honest, I am looking forward to "getting inside" the beast. I am 99 percent sure that a component failed just because of the sound it made, so I am confident that a Power Unit (as they call it) will fix the problem. As a side note, any failed component is returned to Teknatool (sp?) (JPG?) :D and they don't repair components in house.

So the saga continues, hopefully today, I will know ....... :)

Update:

I talked to Jim McCann today for an hour. What a prince of a guy and a fine ambassador of everything Shopsmith.

He is sent me a new power unit today, with the instructions for a DIY install to work backwards from. I had it on the bench with the covers off and looks like a piece of cake.

BTW, The Power unit is a Shopsmith device. Only the computer interface/computer and motor are provided by Tek. The TNT (LOL) power unit wouldn't fit in a SS headstock so SS designed their own and work on them themselves. After talking to Jim today, I am totally at peace with the purchase and am very impressed with the tech.

Jim has been with SS since the 70's.

Thought some might want to know.... :)

Did you see any failure? Burned component, solder cold joint, blown capacitor? I hope you took pictures. Please post them!

The PU is pretty sealed, but I could hear rattling in the unit as you rolled it around, so yeah, something let go. There is a known issue, doesn't happen very often, Jim told me only around 1 percent failure so far, so that isn't bad. I just got one of them. Probably should have bought a lottery ticket when I ordered my M7 :D

If the failure rate is actually only one percent, I would say bravo.

Somehow I just doubt that but then I am a skeptic. I'll stick with "old reliable" thank you.

At least I can fix her if she ever breaks. I bought a bunch of spare parts several years ago when I thought parts may become scarce. Probably will never use them.

I would agree with sticking with the old tech, but the PP is just so awesome. I had been using the MV headstock on the M7 while I was waiting parts. I am sooooo glad to get the power/speed control back :D

There is a huge difference between the old and the new. Yes, I am a little gun shy right now, but I think the tech is pretty sound. I have been told that the PP has taken SS to a new level. I hope that is true ....
