Atlas motor from my 10ER?

The 10ER I got a few years ago had this old dual shaft Atlas motor. The guy I got it from said it didn't have any power but it ran. I did test that it ran but did not load it.

When I took it apart and again it has been a couple of years now I found the wires to the switch were connected by a couple of strands of wire, like two of them. My guess is and was that this would have been a problem when trying to use the machine......

So now I'm starting to look at getting the machine back together. I wanted to pull the motor apart but it is not cooperating. I can get the bolts out and tried to pull it apart but it did not even budge. I tried several methods that have worked in the past but thing thing just will not budge. There are some dents and marks at the seams which might also be detrimental to separation. I've tried to get a puller on but no good place to clamp. Tried to tap with at punch, tried to pull and tap. I'm at the point of saying this thing is not coming apart without damaging something.

So my plan of taking it apart and cleaning and check out is out the window. It does spin free and the bearings seem fine. New plan is to put things together and then see what happens when it is loaded. It will not be getting that much use so it could last me the rest of my life......

So given that this motor might be a bust and I'll need something else does anyone have a recommendation for a new replacement. The 1/2 hp is fine I think. It has a speed changer so I'm not interested in a DC motor at this time.

I've glanced at a couple of places but the cap on most of these sets on the top(bottom when mounted on the 10ER) and gets in the way. The bench is effectively one piece with no separations. I'd rather not mess with that issue unless I have to, so that seems to limit my choices.

The other feature I would like that my present motor is not set up to do is being able to run in reverse. Well the motor might be able to do so but if I can't get inside to find the wires, and I can't there is no way to wire it up. So please keep that in mind.

reible, with a new motor could you just knotch out the bench top? You said it is one piece so I am guessing it is a sheet good top. Unsightly in my eyes but an option. Or block up the Head and tail rest.

Last year, Hog Winslow was offering 10ER motors for free (plus shipping) if you could replace the bearings. It might be worth checking with him.

I had a old 1/2 hp motor setting around for years.
I got my grandfathers shaper that set for year at my brother's place and it got rained on, so the old motor was bad and rusted.
So I tried my motor. It run okay with the belt off. Put the belt on and it just mummed. Had a motor shop look at it and it was wired for 220 and I needed 110. Runs great now that it is wired for 110.

Feeling a little under the weather today, not sure what is in the air but my body is not liking it. So I figured I see what motors I could find at a place I get things like that online.

I did have a section on motors in school it was a lot of years ago and not something that came up when I worked so most of that is gone. I know a few things about the motor, I'd like 1/2 hp, needs to have a 5/8" shaft, rpm 1725, I'd like it to be reversible and run off 120v. In addition since I don't want to make changes to the bench I'd like the cap to be located other then on top.

With that in mind I found a capacitor start and run motor, should be better then just a capacitor start. It is "Farm Duty" continuous duty, ball bearings, TEFC, thermal overload manual reset.

Base 4 slots on 3" to 4-3/4" x 3" centers, right now I don't have access to measure the plate on the 10ER so I don't know if it will fit. See image below for what the plate looks like.

The other issue is the dual capacitors. They are off to the sides but I don't know if they will get in the way or not. It looks like this:

The over all size is listed as 12" x 8-7/8" x 8" no idea how they measure it for the last two dimensions.

We are talking $120 + shipping(it is new surplus).

See any flaws other then the unknowns I have?

I don't think it will work. The slots on the motor bracket are 5 1/4" on center. The height if the AO Smith 1/2HP motor is about 6 1/2" from the mounting bracket. The motor installed with the speed changer clears the bench by about 1 1/4".

Your motor dimensions of 8" and 8 7/8" I would guess are the height from the base to the top of the capacitors and the width through the overload box. From the picture I would guess the height to the top of the capacitors is the 8 7/8" dimension but either way it is too big to clear the bench and too small to bolt to the 10ER motor bracket.
