Rosemary is indeed a looker! Out of curiosity, how did you fixture her new tubes so that they welded up nice and straight?

I have occasionally used the jigsaw on the right side and I have a belt sander set up on the right side of my Mark VII shorty (sort of like the Shop Deputy but longer). For the jigsaw you have to work on the back side of the headstock. I leave the carriage to keep more options available, such as the disk sander or table saw functions or molding head.

To weld the left over cutoffs together:

1. I use an old pipe cutter that cuts the ends nicely. If you do use a pipe cutter be aware that it does swell the metal slightly when cutting. Make sure you file or sand the outside edge flat.

2. I grind a slight 45° on the ends that come together that leaves more room for the weld.

3. I clamp the pieces in heavy angle iron and do spot welds to start, turning 180°, clamp in between turns, then at the 90° and 270° and fill in between.

4. I hand grind a little off the surface and then file or sand on the Shopsmith.

This works most of the time. Those that turn out perfect I use for shorty way tubes and not so perfect go to bench tubes.

May I ask how you are cleaning/stripping the old paint off of the units and polishing up the way bars?

Also, when re-applying paint, are you using a compressor powered spray gun or just spraying the paint right out of the can?

I have 3 Shopsmith units, one is an old greenie that still runs really well but the paint job leaves something to be desired. .

Once again, Rose Mary is definitely a keeper!

Stripped the headstock and replaced all the bearings including the two in the motor. I used a newer idler shaft that I had on hand.

Used Rustoleum Hammered Verde Green and Hammered Rosemary.

Just curious How much did you cut from the Tubes?

I normally cut 18 inches off the way and bench tubes for building a shorty. I have been really happy with that size. I personally feel it allows you the most options short of full size. This one was built with leftover 18 in pieces welded together.

The paint was Rustoleum in spray cans. I like the spray on Goof Off better than what comes in the gallon container for stripping. Expensive but well worth it. Three to four cans per Shopsmith.
