Well it took me long enough to pull the trigger on buying one of these.

I use the Shopsmith drill press function for drilling shelf holes when I have to. (not often)
Use the fence in drill press function and find the center line of the quill. Transfer the the center line to mark the face of the fence with a vertical line. Mark off the spacing on the fence or aux fence and align the layout lines on the piece with the lines on the fence and drill. Quick and accurate if you work carefully and cheaper too
