One caveat! Make sure the new gasket provides a path for the air bleed hole. It is IIRC in the upper right corner.

Making sure the very small bores are clear is a good PM act.

BTW these are notorious for leaking.

It is turbine oil not compressor oil. Home Depot has it in the swamp cooler parts area. There are many brands and some say turbine oil and some don't but I think they are all the same. The common denominator seems to be Zoom Spout Oiler.

As for anything else to lube, yes. The air pump seal. From the manual...

Okay John, now I'm confused. Are you saying that the 10W oil used in the sump is compressor or turbine oil? Above you say it's turbine, not compressor, but in a previous email JPG says to use compressor oil in the sump

That was a reply to Everett who said I recommended compressor oil. I was just correcting him that I said turbine. Any light weight oil will work no matter what they call it. Well except 10 weight motor oil since it has detergent additives and who knows what else in it.

As I said in another post the oil I use is in a zoom spout bottle. Some brands say turbine oil and some don't but I think they are the same thing. Compressor oil, turbine oil, sewing machine oil, etc. they are all fine. If I buy a quart of compressor oil how do I get it in the jig saw? That is why I use the zoom spout oil. Piece of cake and it works like a charm to reach into the head stock to oil the sheaves.

Since this thread is still going on I check online to see if I could find the 10wt non-detergent oil and yes they still sell it and at the same price. Remember we are talking a quart here, not 4oz, 8oz, or 16oz but 32oz for the $4.29 and this is the oil that you want for this sort of use.

I'm sure a lot of other places still carry it. If you have an older car this is what it was spec. for, ie vintage of 1950's when the jig saw was designed. This stuff is not hard to find so I see no point in using something else.

I bought this oil and it seems to be appropriate. The O'Reilly's 10W oil is special order, HF has the air tool oil in stock.

Any of the lightweight oils mentioned should work. The manual I have, Copyright 1965, says SAE 10 oil which would have been a light non-detergent auto oil. As for the gasket, Shopsmith has apparently sold out of them so making one yourself would be the way to go. Looking at the spare I bought from them a few years ago the "cardboard" as apposed to cork may be the better way to go. Use a thick non-corrugated card or box stock. It follows the outline in and outside of the main housing. Make sure it clears the vent hole under the upper right screw hole by cutting out the corner to match the other three corners.

I just changed the oil and replaced the gasket in my Mark II. I just grabbed a square of the gasket cardboard from the hardware store and quart of oil. I traced the plate on the cardboard and cut it out to a little larger than the plate.

Once it was all back together and oiled, it seemed to move smooth as ever. Although the next morning there was about a silver dollar sized drip stain of oil leaking out. Not sure where I went wrong on that, but it sounds like it may just be one of those constant battles. And in that case, I’ll likely replace the cardboard with RTV.

When you say you changed the oil and replaced the gasket in your Mark II, do you mean the Jig Saw you use on your Mark II? If so do not be surprised to find oil under it. As stated before these do tend to leak. I keep a old butter container under mine to catch those spots. With this in mind always remember to check the oil level before use if it's been stored for a while.

Sorry, yes. The jigsaw that came with my Mark II. It was already sitting over top of some cardboard to catch drips from filling it so it was no big deal that it leaked a bit. Although now it seems to have saturated the gasket paper and sealed itself.
