Drill Press Laser Guide

Post by jsburger »

I finally got around to ordering the Peachtree drill press laser guide and got it installed today. I made a bracket the same as Ed did to mount the laser. Ed's thread can be found here http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/gener ... 17544.html Check it out to see how it is mounted on the bracket. To mount it on a 10ER you will have to make the front half of the bracket a little wider since the ears on the back of the guide do not fit between the 10ER tubes. It went very well and the alignment was simple with the included alignment tool. It is dead on. Since this is on my dedicated drill press I expect it to stay dead on. It will save my wife a lot of time drilling holes in her scroll saw projects.

I think using the laser to drill for scroll saw work is going to work great. I did a bunch of holes using it not long after I got it and it went pretty fast and accurate, well accurate enough for the project.

BTW batteries are still going..... I should think about checking all my battery stuff more often, lost a nice flashlight not long ago. I sort of hoped the leakage thing for batteries was over but found out is is not.

Tell me about the clamp you use for the vacuum pickup. I picked up a second flexform hose and have yet to mount it to the permanent drill press which is why I got it, so it can just live there. Its just sitting there not connected to anything, well it is collection dust, on the outside I guess from just sitting there. I need to get on it and get it mounted. Your set up is looking pretty good so I might steal it..... the idea not the real parts.

I hope it works out for you. I bought a metal chop saw a couple of years ago. It has a built in laser guide. I found it useless. It is more difficult to align the metal to the laser than it is to align it to the blade. I pulled the batteries the first day and gave up on the laser.

I have a dewalt CSMS got the work light and love it, not exactly a laser, but the shadow across the blade will show EXACTLY where the cut will happen regardless of blade being used or size of wood etc...no calibration needed...too bad no body has figured out how to make a work light for other stuff to work like it does...of course dewalt quite making the DWS7085 work light probably because no one buying their actual laser system, the work light worked way better and cheaper...

The vacuum attachment is from Peachtree. http://www.ptreeusa.com/dpdustcollector.htm They had some kind of a sale a few years ago so I bought two. The clamp is like a saw table aux fence clamp. The hose stays in place fine.

Shopsmith sell a similar hose and clamp, but without the nozzle.
