Rethinking SE Appalachia

Post by ERLover »

Well with this all, rethinking this for the future after mom.
Shady Valley was at this point spared a bit.
I remember back in the 80s a major drout down that a way, friends in Aug did a road trip to Disney World in FL. No fires that I can remember but did not watch the news much then, they said the farm land was scorched from no rain and record heat.
No place is climate perfect except HA and San Diego and no seasonal changes to speak of, boring for a Mid Westerner, it would be like retirement, every day is a Saturday, what day of the week is it? Every day would be sunny and 75*, what time of year is it?
To much $$$$$$ though.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them. :)

ERL, you might want to think about Hawaii.

One year, went water skiing on New Year's Day.
And, in the ocean. (Had a friend that called it,
"trolling for sharks.")

Half a year earlier, we went out, from Sand Island
to Waikiki beach, and were followed by Spinner
Dolphins the whole way. (Sand Island is next to the
runway for HNL and Hickam AFB.)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinner_dolphin

There were 3 or 4 in the air at one time, and probably
100 following 3 boats we had in the water.

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.

Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.

I think you are either over thinking or over reacting to this.this summer was on average a normal one for rainfall in shady. yes some other places were dryer than normal but we have been lucky.

Find a location that you like and that serves your general needs and settle.

Quit thinking about climatic changes. Those are going to occur no matter where you settle. Snow this year at this time but last year there was sun shine and warm temperatures.

The weather is definitely not a constant and never has been. This was true way back when there was minimum air pollution from industry and nearly no pollution from transportation. Well, maybe not so. Sometimes, when riding in that carriage, it got pretty bad - but then it was momentary and I don't believe it adversely effected the carbon foot print.

Retirement is great. I retired to Florida and now I tell what day of the week it is by what doctor we have to go to.

I think all areas of the country has problems and things we probably could do without.
Wind, flood, earth quake, sink holes, storms, fires, snow, drought, hurricanes, tornados, mudslides, insects, and on and on.

You have to decide. Do you like changing seasons? Heat, humidity, snow, ice. Rain or near desert. Lakes, ponds dry land. Crowds or no body for miles in any direction. How is your health do you go to doctor, hospital, emergency center. What about Fire and police protection?

Noise near international airport or having to travel for an hour to fly somewhere. If you have kids, If school age how are the schools, if they are grown how far are you going to be from them. Same thing for parents they may need you to be near to help them. You may need your kids to help you.

There are a thousand decisions. And you may regret most of those decisions once you make them. I had a buddy buy a 5 acre lot covered with pine trees. Hacked his way in and cleared an area.for the house. He could stand stark naked on his porch on Sunday afternoon and no one would know. Had two problems water well was over 1000 feet deep and the pump would draw dry if ran very long. Second problem an ice storm brought down a lot of the pine trees. They get heavy bend over building spring energy and when they break they fly horizontally like a rocket. He had a 12 - 16 incher come flying through his bathroom window just as his daughter walked out. A second delay on her part or if the tree had snapped a second sooner she would have been in trouble.

If you over think it you will probably never move. ;)

Drought is very temporary. It will change as fast as you can move somewhere else. And, you could likely move into something much worse than a dry year.

I've been to San Diego, and it isn't a place I would ever go again. Southern California is much worse for drought than where you are now.

And, Hawaii rains almost every day. That would be worse than being a little dry. Look into the cost of living before you even think about Hawaii. Years ago I had a friend who moved to Hawaii because he had a good job offer. He came back home in 2 years because even though he was earning 2-3 times what he earned here, he couldn't afford to keep a roof over his head in Hawaii.

Back almost forty years ago a corporation that I worked for wanted to open a major center here in Florida. They would move employees all expenses paid. I came with the promise of staying for 2 years and then I could write my ticket to where ever. I'm still here but that is another story.
What we found that after a intensive effort we could only get less than half the employees we needed. The corporation then did a survey of the most desirable areas to move to. They found the North West was most desirable, second was around Colorado, third was Kentucky area. When a center in Colorado was opened a surprising number of employees volunteered to move from Florida to Colorado.

Interestingly all Florida installations approx 30,000+ employees of said corporation are now virtually gone.
