Have you thought of the 555811 Universal Lathe Tool Rest System? I know it is $220 but it does get you into the end of and bottom of the bowl.
A picture of your setup would be very helpful in understanding the issues better for most of us I suspect.
Also you said you have the "S" tool rest. If you bought the Kit opposed to the single tool rest you also have the 4" and the 90 degree, each of which is available separately
The 555314 4-inch Specialty Lathe Tool Rest is about $25 and can be cut down even smaller if you need.

I don't have a bowl gouge and a more massive tool would help but I don't think it would solve the whole problem. Shopsmith's universal tool holder would solve my problem but seems to expensive. I am very much aware of using a chisel protruding to far from the tool rest and am trying to avoid that as much as I can. I am presently working on a support that is parallel to the bottom of the bowl that should solve my problem. I am using pieces form my metal scrap bin. It will probably look ugly but it will be solid and should work well. I will post some pictures when I get it done. I can always buy the universal tool rest if my idea does not work. Thanks for the response I can use all the help I can get.

As luck would have it, Shopsmith just announced a special on the Universal tool rest, along with some other goodies. The discount is enough to significantly mitigate the wallet pain. I'll be placing my own order tomorrow.
I have a nice 520, but I'm actually hoping to figure out a clean way to adapt the UTR to my 10ER, which is currently awaiting light restoration for dedicated-lathe duty. On a stand that elevates it to a comfortable height for my own long and once-lanky bones. And with those massive old way tubes adding even more weight and stiffness.
I don't have a bowl gouge but haven't seen the need for one at this point. As get better I may purchase one later. I have built a support that attaches to the end of the unit where the accessories go (band saw etc) and it appears to work pretty well. I am well aware of what can happen if the tool is extending to far over the tool rest one of the main reasons I wanted a better support system. I have tried to upload some pictures but it did not seem to work. I still have some work to make the support look better and may cut off the posts on each side of the shop smith tool post to allow it to rotate more.
I sure the universal tool post would solve my problem but I like to build things. I will try my support first then may consider the universal tool rest later. Still can's get pictures to load.
Picture posting is actually easy. At the bottom of the text window click on "upload attachment". Then browse, then Add Attachment, then Submit. Keep the photos in kilobytes, preferably under 300...

I have done that twice and it did not work. I will try again. I tried again clicking upload attachment clicked browse doubled clicked the pictures I wanted to add. the file showed it was working and blinked off the on again but not pictures. I have submitted support question to shopsmith.
The picture has to meet certain size limits. The limits are 2050 pixel width and 1180 pixel tall. Most camera pictures will need to be sized to be used here.

Here is a video of why one doesn't use the wrong too for the job. If you don't like to see blood then don't watch........ Yes I have posted this before and it has appeared a few times since but it never "hurts" to review safety information.
When I was in HS shop class we experienced several thrown tools. I got to use the first lathe in the shop so there was no chance of a tool getting me in the back. They were staggered but still it worried me.

There is a file size limit and a pixel height and width limit. If you exceed either of those limits it will not upload.
This is important and not very obvious. When you click submit the page will scroll to the top. If the file was not uploaded there will be an error message to will tell you why, file size or pixel limit. The error message is not evident unless you are looking for it. It is in the same color and text size as everything else.
I think the file size is 2MB. I don't remember what the pixel limit is but I use 1024X768 and it works fine. Just remember you have to comply with both limits for a picture and the error message will tell you which you exceeded.
