Tailstock stuck in MK V

I'll third that. If it had been apart it would be either fix or broken by now. May need a new part or parts after this anyway.

I am going to do the disassemble after more travel this week. I think I see some corrosion around the tube-housing joint.

Believe me, if you punch the pin clear through the hinge pin, the pin will drop out. The only way that it would not is if the casting is full of crud to prevent it from moving. Gravity works.

Take a real good look at the pin (that you are attempting to remove) and then roll the hinge pin 180° so that you can inspect the other end. What is see in picture #2 is not quite what I expected. That pin looks to be a bit mushroomed.

There was a rule on the battle field requiring that the leader always have an alternate plan of attack. Yoy might want to remove the casting from the Way and Bench Tubes.

The pin is in good shape. the pic doesn't do it justice.
My Pop purchased the MK V in 1974 or so. I don't remember him ever taking it apart. I think the the disassembly was when I removed the legs to bring it to Indiana from PA.

If you are planning to dismantle so that you can apply force on the stuck tube, do use something that fits in that bore. I am thinking that the leg off of the tool rest might be good for that job.

No metal to metal contact. Wooden block or rubber mallet only. Support the castingso that it does not feel all of the impact forces while trying to drive that post out.

It sounds as though you may be further along with this task than I realized.

If you have the roll pin removed you already know that it is 5/32". I used the Craftsman Pin Punch 42894 and a ball peen hammer to drive it out.

With the roll pin removed, some light tapping pushed the pivot pin out of the Base casting.

At that point, you would have the Base Arm in your hands with the Tail Stock stuck tight in the bore.

I would drive it out (as I said before) with a large rubber mallet and the short leg from the tool rest acting as the pin punch.

So I am not the only one. Mine was stuck in like yours and i actually had to resort to heat. I tried every reasonable thing i could think of including a jack to no avail. i did finally get it out in several pieces. I am relieved to see that i did actually try all the suggestions on this post first though. Mine was wedged under a work table for probably 5-10 years before i got it but be careful man and take the base mount off the thing first. Keep in mind, my father and I did this while still learning what a Shopsmith was a few months ago. I learned alot. Where are you at with it?

I would,,,,, consider,,,,,, replacing both pieces even if you do get it out.
