Vacuum hose cover

Post by reible »

40mm TIGHT Braided PET Expandable Sleeving DIY. The vacuum hoses seem to like to catch on things when using portable tools. I'm employing several fixes already but I've seen several youtube videos with people adding sleeving over the hoses.

Yes it does sound like a fun project and yes I'm going to try it. Of course it comes from China, not a good selling point but maybe they are the only ones making it???? Seems so at least on ebay. This also means a delivery date of April 22 to May 13. Not a rush anyway. Cost for 5m is $16.18 in the 40mm size.

This video gave some sizes and ideas and links to find the material. So if you find it interesting or have already made one for your hoses let me know. I'm going to do one anyway and might be able to help on some of the details after I've actually made one if you are interested. Like I said there are several related videos I've already watched so you need not post links for my benefit.

Also note that he is not using the festool deflector (489022) which is a big help when used on the end of the track. And no this is not only for festool vacuum hoses, that is why I got 5m of it.

FWIW, there are a bunch of sellers on eBay. You might be able to find it here instead of being shipped from China.

Here is a company in Florida

I have that stuff on all my Festool hoses. Got mine from cableorganizer.com as John mentioned above.

BTW the video I listed has some other information if you care to use the "SHOW MORE" button. Of the ebay listings, about 3 pages of them from his link there were only a couple supplier with the 40mm in 5 meter lengths. The one I picked is the same place the guy in the video got his and it was the cheapest.

The stuff I ordered comes out to $16.18 with the better shipping offer, $2 less if you want free shipping. That is for 5 meters or 16.4 feet. That is about a buck a foot so you can use that to price other peoples options.

No idea when the cover will come in but I wanted to start looking at how I think I want to attach it to the hose.

I did like the idea of the heat shrink, checked what I had and none of it is large enough to fit the hose and cord together. So while out shopping I stopped by to see what might be sitting on the shelf at the Menard's store. Sure enough they have something but about $8 for it.

I then noticed that they had a tape that looks much like something we use to have at work that you would wrap over it self and have it stick to itself to the point that it did not pull apart well and was actually pretty water tight. It was a commercial item and I don't recall the people who made or sold it. 3M comes to mind but.....

It did remind me of a household product they use to call live rubber or some such name???

Anyway Menard's sells this splicing tape that is "self-amalgamating". You just got to love that term......... Can't wait to find a way to use that again sometime. So this sound like the stuff we use to use as defined here:

A roll of 3/4" x 22' x .,030 mil was $2.49. So that is my plan until it becomes my solution or bust. Anyway don't be surprised if you see self-amalgamating coming up in a post in the near future.

That tape was used a lot years ago in the Air Force during aircraft maintenance. The tape we used was not flat. It was tapered across the width from about 1/16" thick in the center down to a couple of thou at the edges. That was so that when you wrapped it with an over lap the surface of the wrapped tape was level/flat. The tape also had a line along the length on either side of center. The line was how far you should overlap the wrap. There were two types, black and orange in color. The orange tape was high temperature. The wikipedia says in the Air Force it is called centerline tape. I never heard that term. On the flight line we called it F4 tape which is what the wikipedia link says was one of the names.

It is some really really good stuff.

The hose cover arrived today. There will be no hiding this hose when it done.

Now I have to decide if I want to run the power cord in it too. It would/could be handy. If so then do I want a spare cord for the purpose??

At least I'm another step closer as of today.

I got to thinking that I never did post a picture of the finished hose with cover. I think everything worked out well after a small glitch on my part having the cover to near the end of the hose where it attaches to the vacuum. Had to cut it back by a foot due to the dust collector sitting on the vacuum.

The cover makes it a lot easier to have the hose slide over things and I think it was worth it. I don't think every hose should have it or for that matter needs it. For those in the know the hose is the 27mm. I also have the 36mm but have not decided if I want to do the same for it. I think the same size tubing might work but I don't have enough left for the job. I do have enough to see if it fits.

As you can see I ran the cord with it. I used the heavier gauge cord which works with the tools that need it as well as the ones that can use the lighter cord.
