My 520 started singing today.

OK I will take some pictures tomorrow. The main table is torn apart waiting on a trunnion but I can get some pictures of the other stuff. I have some pictures I took last week showing blade position. I did measure the difference between the miter slots and the blade and there was over 1/4 inch difference between the left and right side. Because of the trunnion I could not move the table to balance out the difference. Here is one picture I hope this helps. This is with the quill fully retracted and headstock locked in positioned against the rubber buffer. This picture shows the same type of position as when I measure from the left and right miter track. I think this problem is caused by the bad trunnion and not being able to move the table to allign it. This has nothing to do with the blade harmonic because I have had this problem since day one years before the harmonic developed.

An excellent picture of the 'result'. We need additional pix so as to assist in determining the 'cause'.

That hole dimension increase will not allow a 1/4" movement.

So the system is NOT setup to position the blade anywhere near half way between the miter slots. The miter slots are 7.0" apart so the saw blade should be close to 3 1/2" from the blade. Give or take 1/2 the thickness of the blade.

The trunions with all four holes drilled to the size of the front holes on the trunions (1/2") will only allow the table to shift 1/8" (1/16" in either direction). so that is not going to solve your 1/4" offset.

I would like to know how much of the way tube (without the rubber bumper) is visible between the headstock and the carriage. This is a 520 so I would expect it to be a very little bit less than 1 1/2".

The distance from the knurled aluminum collar (on the quill shaft) to the left face of the blade should be 1 3/4".

Previously stated as a little over 1 1/2" in error.


The picture that you posted shows a measurement from the blade to the edge of a cutout in the table insert. To solve this problem you would be better off measuring to surfaces like the edge of the table cut out or to the edge of the miter track. The table insert is, in my mind, an unknown variable.

Will do tomorrow. The rubber table stop is new from Shopsmith. It is exactly the same size as the old one the machine had when I got it. I only replaced it because the original had been cut off because the original owner thought it was packing. That said I will take a picture of both.

Which way tube did you install the stop ring on, the front or the back? I read somewhere that it needs to be on the back tube as the measurement is different. If on front is locates the headstock slightly more to the right (or so I've been told!).

Try putting the rubber carriage stop ring on the BACK tube. Can't say it doesn't matter until you rule it out.

It seems to me that the easy way to clear that is would be to measure the width of the rubber bumper. It should be just a little less than 1 1/2"; same as the measurement just made on the rear tube.

Changing the rubber ring requires that the headstock be removed. I don't do that just for the fun of it; maybe one day but no more.

These images together indicate to me that every thing is right with the headstock and carriage placement with respect to the headstock.

What is left? Carriage and Table.

I think you said you have the table off. If so, you have a real good view of the trunnions, the carriage and the table legs.

Is this a reasonable facsimile of what you see?
