Thanks JPG. I'm trying to figure out a dedicated drill press set up on a very short setup and while jsburger's setup looks impressive I'm not sure I would like the leg out in front of the table. Right now I'm thinking of just using my spare band saw as a counter balance on about a 36" foot print.

I thought about it at the time I was contemplating how I wanted to build it but in practice it has not been a problem for me. When I stand at the drill press my right leg/foot is off to the side of the leg. My right foot fits through the arched cut out in the leg. I actually never thought about it when the unit was complete. I just walk up to it and use it. I have never thought that I wished the leg were not there. Of course that might not be the case for you.

I just remembered another thought I had when building it. The bench tubes are the 18" pieces I cut off to make my shorty. I used them as is because I had them. I remember thinking that if the leg was a real problem I could cut 6" or so off them to move the leg back.

For my drill press I have adopted a set of rolling drawers that I built to fit under the shopsmith. It really nice to have that drill press stuff right at hand so that part is good. However when it was under the shopsmith the 2" wheel height was fine. Now it works so long as I don't try to get my toes too far under it.

One of my projects this year is to change out the casters and go to 3", a minor change but I think I'll like it better.... if not then there are 4" casters which is the typical for such things.

What is nice is that they are all attached together but if need be they come back apart in to 4 units. Loose pin hinges with brass rods for the pins and bent, same idea as the old shopsmith under cabinets.

I personally like a nice toe kick area and space where my shins don't get bumped, one reason I dislike the shopsmith rack sitting on the front of a machine.

Due to space restraints I have decided to go Johns way with the dedicated drill press and try to shorten the leg a couple of inches.



Anyone have a couple of 16" tubes they don't need?

Will 15" work? I have a set you can have it they will. Steve
