My 520 started singing today.

The singing has stopped!

This is just a wrap-up post to provide some closure to this subject.

The singing was caused by an issue with the quill. I am guessing a bearing was going bad and that caused a micro vibration on the saw blade. When I turned off the machine it sounded like a tuning fork. The issues was resolved when I replaced the quill with a rebuilt quill. Now the music has stopped. That was the only change made.

Table/blade position. The blade on my machine was extremely close to the left side of the insert opening. After much discussion we narrowed it down to two issues. 1. The trunnion did not have 1/2 inch holes so table alignment was very limited. That problem was resolved when Shopsmith replaced the trunnion. The other issue with blade alignment relates to the bumper width. The bumper is the final decider of blade alignment. Narrow bumper and the blade is more to the right. Wide bumper the blade is more to the left. Shopsmith made different bumper widths at different times. The current and "correct" bumper will place the blade to the left of center.

So if anyone has similar issues in the future check the trunnion and the quill first.

I am very pleased to know that you found real solutions to the issues you had. I really dislike and am uncomfortable with problems that just go away.

I would much appreciate a couple bits of information on the corrected machine configuration . 1) How wide is the rubber spacer? 2) Using a ruler (need not be precision) what is the distance from the two faces of the blade to the near edge of each respective miter track. Mine miter trackseparation measures 7 1/64".

OK I finally got back into the shop.
The buffer is 1 7/16

My miter track separation is 7 1/64
From my left of blade to track is 3 5/16
From my right of blade to track is 3 1/2

It's still not centered but it is much better than it was. To center it I would need to trim the buffer but I am good with the way it is for now. If they make a buffer that is not as wide as mine give me the part number and I may order one next time I place an order from shopsmith. I haven't tried a dado blade in it yet so I don't know how that will fit but I can always extend the quill if I need to.

OK I will remeasure everything including the blade kerf.

When you remeasure, remove the blade from the arbor and take all your blade and table measurements with respect to the right face of the arbor.

(same as taking all measurements with respect to the left face of the blade)

The difference between those two numbers is how far off your setup is from the centerline (ignores blade thickness).

What you describe can be compensated for by extending the quill. How far must you extend the quill to center the blade in the cutout?

How thick is the rubber "quill" bumper? There is a rubber bumper on your quill shaft, right? Mine measures .103" (not enough to cause your problem even if it was missing).

Just a side comment not meant to be a solution: When I do a table alignment, I push the table as far left as I can. I then snug up the rear left trunnion bolt (acts as a pivot point). Then I perform the alignment.

So how far off am I as it relates to Shopsmith standards? Is the blade supposed to actually be centered or does it sit off center some?

I will redo the table alignment. I may have pulled instead of pushed.

I am using standard Shopsmith blades.

When I did the measurements I measured from inside edge of miter slot to the blade so the measurements do not include blade thickness.
