face plate wobble

Post by jandrewmd »

Just started with Mark 7. Whether I use the face plate or the Nova chuck, both get loose on the quill in a few minutes. It seems to me that the plate and chuck do not fit far enough down on the quill.

What might I be doing wrong? Is there some adjustment that would bring the quill out a few mm more beyond the collar that seems to limit how deep the quill extends into the face plate or chuck?

Thanks in advance for advice.

Welcome to the forum!

How are you mounting the faceplate or chuck? Are you using an adapter that turns the spindle into a threaded spiblle, or using faceplates and chuck inserts designed for Shopsmiths from the groun up? I use both... If you are using either, make sure you back the set screw out far enough to allow the equipment to slide all they way on the spindle, and tighten the set screw so it seats only on the flat of the spindle. I have found that if i use some of my chucks with a threaded adapter, if i don't use a grub screw it will spin off the adapter when i shut the machine down.

If it is the new Mark 7 and it has the Power Pro headstock the set screw may be coming loose due to vibration caused by the speed being constantly adjusted by the electronics. Also the setscrew should be a ball end type so it fits correctly on the flat of the quill shaft. Also make sure you have the correct adapter for the chuck. There is a special one for the Shopsmith. Look at the Nova website for the correct one
Try to get a Nylock set screw for the chuck adapter or put a small amount of RTV on the threads to prevent loosening. As long as the setscrew is on the flat of the quill shaft you should be good to go.

Welcome aboard.

It might be technique.
As you are tightening the set-screw, rock the allen wrench back and forth to ensure that end of the set-screw is flat against the spindle.

Let me add my welcome!

Sometimes a few pictures help. Here is one of the shaft and it should extend just about 1-1/4". If this is shorter then it is possible that the collar was loosened at some point and has moved forward. If this is the case come on back and we can get you back to normal in no time.

The face plate should fulling fit on, right up to the collar as shown here:

The chuck should mount the same way. Now the adapter could be an issue if it is coming loose. Some years back they shipped with the plain 5/8" adapter rather then the shopsmith version with angled set screw. They may have messed up again??? Anyway the correct adapter is a "S" and that will be stamped on it.

If you see something different they I have pictured let us know and perhaps post a few pictures of your own with the issues.

The 'collar' serves to limit axial play in the quill shaft. There is no other position for it.

The quill shaft has a tapered flat. The arbor /chuck must be rocked so as to center the set screw at the lowest point on the flat. The arbor/chuck should be up against the 'collar' when the set screw is tightened.

I have to assume that the set screw is retracted sufficiently, other wise it would not pass over the non-flatted end of the quill shaft.

Thanks. I'll take a look at the set screw. I haven't been sensitive to fact that there are different set screws.

One of our club members had a similar experience with a Nova chuck. He was using it on the Delta 46-460 lathe at our shop and had some run out. After several checks I found that the chuck was not screwed fully on to the chuck adaptor. I removed the chuck and adapter assembly from the machine and put the adapter in a bench vice and was able to rotate the chuck body another 3/4 of a turn.I did not have to use a wrench only my bare hands. The chuck and adapter have to be screwed together tightly to eliminate any play in the threads. The chuck did run true after the adjustments.
