Hole in the accessory shaft guard?

Just curious if anyone has decided to drill a hole or cut a slot in the guard that comes with the PowerPro headstock for the accessory side? The guard is a nice extra safety feature, and works fine if all you ever put there is the power coupler hubs.

I am aware of the Quill Twister (http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... wister.htm), but that seems a bit overkill.

Alternatively, anyone 3d-print a twister? This may be the perfect time for me to try some 3d modeling and remixing https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2206530 or something similar...hrmmm

For those curious, the reason this comes up is that while lathe turning I generally have a small faceplate on the accessory side of the tailstock. I use it to hand rotate the spindle to check clearance before turning on the machine.

I have added a handle to one of my surplus turning faceplates (which I do not leave on under power) to help rotating the headstock shaft when lubricating or servicing the headstock, etc.

I find it easier to grasp especially if I have it vertical for some reason.

I find it most helpful when I am using the quill to hold a tap to thread a hole and keep it straight.

I do have a quill twister, which is also handy at times for a number of things.

Don't have one of those - never have had one. Have seen pictures of this "guard", but that's the closest I've come.

In fact I'm wondering how one takes off or puts on the things that might get installed? Hubs, sanding disks/drums come to mind but I can also see putting a drill chuck on that side for holding sanding drums or what not.

So how do you detach and reattach items with that in place or does it need to come off?

As it is now you would have to take it off. It is held in place by two 5/32" hex drive button head screws. Then you can mount anything but the guard has to stay removed. The only other thing that can be done is drill a hole in the guard to access the set screw. Like many of us have done to the band saw cover to access the tension screw.

FWIW, the drill chuck is too big in diameter to mount with the guard in place but sanding disks and such will fit inside the guard.

Unless OSHA changed something I suspect the guard is the result of European safety regulations. During a SS Traveling Academy about 2 years ago Mike Young was discussing safety. He asked if anyone noticed that the band saw cover no longer has knobs to hold it on. It has 5/32" hex drive screws. He said European regulations require any kind of guard/safety cover not be easily removable so they had to get rid of the knobs.

I drilled a hole in the top of mine to access the set screw. I mounted the guard in a more permanent fashion, with 1/4" bolts and lock nuts, so removing the guard to put on a coupling hub or other accessory would be too much work.

If a coupling hub is left attached to the shaft, then a coupler can be used to turn the shaft manually.

The OD of the upper shaft guard also matches the ID of a PVC cap exactly, so I keep the cap on there too as an extra measure of protection to keep curious fingers, stray hair, etc from getting entangled.

My Power Pro Head Stock came with the new guard. I think I tossed it in the trash.
