Today in the Shop "who knew double sided tape doesn't last"

When I got my upgrade kit from a 500 to a 520 they had just changed over to the scales system. For those of you who don't have the system let me say I don't think you are missing much. I do use it but only when I'm doing a ruff sort of cutting.

The way it works is that the scale is held on by magnetic strips on the front rail assembly. Then a black plastic part on the rip fence is used to position the fence relative to the scale.

So on my last use of the shopsmith the black plastic bit on the rip fence fell off. Not a big deal as I wasn't using the scales then anyway. But since I some times do I wanted to fix it.

Looking at it you could see that a double sided piece of tape was used to attach it. Getting bumped around for years was a little more then the tape could take. I could see some saw dust migration so this has been coming for a while.

I had to clean the stick residue off the rip fence and the plastic part. Not one of those things I like to do but what can you do.

So this is the two parts that need to go together:

I have no idea what type of tape shopsmith used or uses but I guess sooner or later everyone who owns a 520 system with the scales is going to have the separation, double side tape is not going to last forever.

So I have a nice new roll of this stuff:

So I figured I give it a go. It was the right width and I trimmed it to length. Stuck it on the plastic part then peeled the second side and stuck it to the rip fence.

Now if it holds on for a week or two I'll let you know, if it starts getting in to years well then I might not be around to let you know......

With that done it was time to check out the flowers, in this case a primrose along the side yard.

Tomorrow we will have lycoris flowers to enjoy. They put up the leaves in the spring then die back only to shoot up a stem and flower this time of year. It is like you see this stem just coming out of the ground and you can almost see it grow, it's that fast. Anyway, tomorrow tomorrow it's only a day away.

I've read that people complain that Fast Cap tape is almost impossible to remove. So, your application is likely safe. Time will tell.

Mine never held and I tried multiple two sided tapes (not fast cap however). I finally drilled and screwed it on. End of problem!
