Couple more 10ER questions

I'm getting some more time on the 10ER this week. It has been apart for so long I find I'm forgetting things and finding things I painted and stored for the last couple of years need some touch-ups..... such is life.

Anyway, I have the bench drilled for the legs and the base. It would appear the only way to determine the location of the other end is to put it together enough to the point that I can mark it. To the end I'm wondering if the tubes should extend out a particular distance or just flush with the extension bracket on the tail stock side.

On the headrest end it would be the same distance in (width of the extension bracket) to the tie bar, then the 1/8" to the headrest.

I'm waiting on the touch up paint to dry before I can do much else....

Do people put a little grease on the hinge pins when they put it together? Or perhaps wax?


Then I recall seeing a 10E? with a bench and the shopsmith logo on the bench. I'd like to see that again but I don't recall who posted it. So if this rings any bells let me know. I think I might do something like this using a current a shopsmith decal which I have purchased from them.

My 'opinion' re tube projection.

It should equal the thickness of the tail stock.(both ends)

I believe the hinge end will will rest correctly when raised to vertical then. If not, I think vertical position is more important. Perhaps that is a better starting adjustment. YMMV

I would grease lightly the hinge pins and bores.

Skip has used a decal(or similar) on his. I have seen pix of others.

OK vertical for that end then. I hope they are the same or pretty close.

The large one centered or there abouts......... not sure where I really want it but perhaps better seen if it is forward more and right adjusted??

Anyway I have time before that will happen.

For the pivot base end I put mine vertical, (without the headstock installed) and adjusted the the waytubes till they were 90 degrees to the bench. There are pads on the base that they rest on.

Oh, and on the head rest end, the width of the tailstock, so the extension table can be used on that end also.

Though you are using legs, the original bench was made from wood, and the length of the machine didn't change on the ER which was shorter than the E due to the Rounded Tilt Base.

There is a Black and White drawing for the 57" table and blue-line drawings that came with the machines. All are in the 10E & 10ER Magna folder.

They may be of some assistance on the measurements involved. Where you drill the holes will determine how much way tube protrusion you are going to have available to work with at both ends.

Other things took up most of my day but I did get back to the 10ER. I now have the holes all drilled.

One of the tubes must have a dent or out of round or bulged end. As soon as things are past the end they slide nice but getting them to that point is a pain. I spent way too much time dealing with that.

I'm going to clean the tubes again after sitting for a couple of years did not do them any good, no rust as I waxed them before storing.

I'll give that tube end a good look and maybe emery cloth it a bit until things slide over easy. I can't "see" the issue but you certainly feel it when working with it.

It is all apart again so I can finish the bench top.

Got a couple more other project coming up so I don't think having the 10ER running will happen for a while yet.
