Picture frame mode

Had to crank out a picture frame while glue was drying on the final assembly on the table. Alder, mahogany and black walnut.

Interesting jig ,,,, cant wait to see the finish on it ,did you use biscuits ?

No I couldn't use wafers because they were too narrow. At the moment they are just glued. Tomorrow after the glue dies I will drill them out for dowels top and bottom.

Cool frame, and i am very curious about that clamping jig (and the segmented vessel to the right!). Any chance you can post a pic of the jig at work?

I put the frame back in the jig to take the pictures. It's a fairly easy jig to build and it works very well. It's made of 1/2" ply and the corner blocks are 3/4 ply. The corner blocks have two holes that are half the distance of the holes on the cross members for a little better fine adjustment. I will frequently put the frame together on the bench with pinch dogs and then set the frame in the jig for clamping just to speed up the process. Greatly simplifies making picture frames which is a good use of the scraps left over from other projects. Between frames and segmented bowls one can use up just about every little scrap.

In the pictures I left out the wax paper that is there while actually gluing between the frame and the jig.

Great looking jig. Definitely useful if you are making a lot of frames. By the way have you seen these #11 round biscuits designed for mitered frames.

Yes I have the bit. I have use it a few times but on the small frames I get either too lazy or in too big a hurry and just glue them up. If they look too small to rely on just the glue I will put a dowel in the top and bottom, either 1/4" or very frequently 1/8 inch dowels. Doing the dowels is just quicker than the router set up and ends up fairly hidden unless you look real close. Interesting point is that that is one of those functions, horizontal boring, that without a SS would be far more difficult to do.

Is it correct to assume the rectangular pieces under the long bolt heads that serve as 'feet' perform the function of a washer and that there is another on the under side with a nut(or two)?

Post us a picture after you put in the dowels. I might change my process depending on how it looks. Putting in the biscuits is more work than drilling holes.
