Since I've been doing more turning, I've been struggling to keep my lathe tools sharp. I just can't afford the Wolverine jig. I tried the Shopsmith lathe sharpening guide, but could never quite get it right. I tried freehanding based on some videos I watched, but couldn't master that either. I stumbled upon a YouTube video showing someone's shop made jig like the Wolverine and the light bulb lit up. Why didn't I think of that before?
I had rescued two good pieces of 3/4" plywood out of the scrap pile at work the day before and used them for this. No real plans, just making it up and figuring it out as I went along. And it works great! My lathe tools have never had such a great cutting edge!
I still need to make the skew attachment.

Awesome platform. Are you holding the extension arm in place from underneath?
Did you design the "vari-grind" jig yourself or find? If found, would you mind sharing the link? My 3D printer isn't doing anything at the moment ;^)

Right now, the arm is tight enough in the slot that I don't need anything else to hold it in place, but not so tight that I can't adjust it with a little nudging. As it loosens up through use, I'll add a bolt and knob on the top to clamp the bar down.roy_okc wrote:Heath,

I have a problem with my Shopsmith. I bought it from some guy through a "For Sale" notice in the want ads of the local paper. He told me it was a 1953 Model, but now, thanks to technology, I see that is not correct. I have the same machine that is in the picture (20171202_211131.jpg) in this post. Can you tell me what model it is, where I can find an owners manual and where I can get replacement parts? My speed adustment bracket is broken.
