Re: 10er Dedicated Lathe Thread

Post by dzawacki »

I am just starting turning and I was hoping someone could recommend a chuck to get for my 10ER. I don't really know what will fit on the SS and what has proven to work well. Trying to keep the cost down to, so the wife doesn't put a halt to it before I get started.
Looking for ways to convince my wife to let me spend more time in the shop.

I don't have a 10ER, so I'm going to assume it has a 5/8" shaft like the Mark 5. If so, both Oneway and Nova make Shopsmith adapters for their chucks. Shopsmith used to sell the Oneway Talon chuck, and since their partnership with Novatek on the PowerPro, they sell the Nova chuck. I have the Talon chuck, and it seems like people who have both slightly prefer the Talon to the Nova. Either will work well for you, and Shopsmith puts the Nova chuck on sale fairly regularly.

I use the Nova G3 Chuck with the Nova 5/8" plain insert with my 10ER. Works great for me. If you go the Nova G3 route, make sure you don't buy the one with the fixed 1" 8 tpi built in threads. You have to get the one that requires a threaded insert to accept the 5/8" plain insert. I think the model # for the one you need is Nova 48202 "Insert Type", and not the 48232 Reversible Chuck.

As an aside, with the insert type chuck, if you get a different lathe with say for example the popular 1" 8 spindle thread, you can buy another insert and put in the chuck after you remove the 5/8" plain insert, and then use the chuck in the other lathe.

Thought I'd add one of my projects... Black locust fell down in my back yard early this year and I finally chainsawed it up the other day. This was the first time I'd ever started with a log before. Having a hand in every aspect of the product was very cool and rewarding! I can't wait for more...

I recently bought myself the Nova G3 chuck and like it a lot. I'm still very much a newbie to turning, but I've been enjoying using it. I got it from eBay in a combo package with the wormwood screw, spur drive, and Shopsmith insert. I haven't removed it from my 10ER since I got it!

I went with both sizes. I got the smaller one first, it has a maximum rpm of 800 which fit with the mark 5 speed range of slow (700 rpm). The larger one has a maximum rpm of 600 which works with the speed reducer, powerpro or 10's that can go that low.

I don't recall the dimensions they grip but it seemed more reasonable to have both and cover the full range they have rather then find out that at the last stage I didn't have the jaws to finish with. I added the larger size when I got the powerpro.

BTW the larger set has the same lower range as the smaller if I remember right, it just adds the larger sizes.

Here is a photo of them layed out with the smaller set on top for reference:

Thanks for the pic. So would you go for the larger first?
