Second ShopSmith, Needs Work

I just got probably the best deal I'll ever find on a SS 10R and a bunch of parts to go with it. However, it needs a good deal of work to get everything running smoothly again. Any suggestions on dos and don'ts before I get started? There's a small amount of rust here and there and most things that move seem to be gummed up from years of no cleaning.

Since this is my second SS, my wife doesn't quite understand why I need a second. Suggestions to convince her are welcome, personally I think it would make a beautiful coffee table.

I’ve used a Thanksgiving dinner analogy successfully. To wit, cooking a big Thanksgiving meal with just one burner is not impossible. But it would sure take a lot longer, and it wouldn’t be a lot of fun.

Tell her it is like shoes, or purses.

Steve (Scou) .did have one in his living room for a while, and he did use it as a beverage table, (may not have been coffee though )

Especially be sure to follow the link to Mickyd's restoration thread.

They aren’t that complicated, and built like tanks, just be sure the lock knobs for the table are released before turning the raiser crank, the arm can break.

The only routine maintenance is to keep the way tubes clean and waxed, and if you have a speed changer they need lubricating occasionally.

As you can see in the photo, it didn't come with a bench, so I'll need to figure that out once I have it working again.

From my perspective, and that of many others, we don't see the problem.

I had a similar discussion with my wife a while back, See prior posts http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/commu ... ml#p205103 She finally stopped asking about my 'acquisitions'. She likes what comes out of the shop and doesn't wander in there very often. In the end its a lot like politics and sausage. If you like the outcome you probably shouldn't watch either being made.

As you can see in the photo, it didn't come with a bench, so I'll need to figure that out once I have it working again.

My first one didn't come with a bench either, it is easy to make.

Your 10ER has the later (shorter) pivot base, The plans say to make the bench 60'' but you only need to make it 57" long. Also instead of notching 4x4's for the legs, just glue together two pieces of 2x4. And if you are will be using the lathe function then adjust the length of the legs to make the spindle level with your elbow.

I agree with UncleSnick. She likes what comes out of my shop so leaves me alone. I also repair them for over 15 years now and money back into the budget quieted that argument real fast. My first was a 10ER with speed changer and jigsaw. I added drawers under the base which I highly recommend. That jigsaw is very nice once set up. I sold it when I bought my first Mark V in 1983. Then the upgrades started and I bought my 2nd for the 18 inch jigsaw & jointer. The headstock had a problem and being highly mechanical I took it apart and fixed it and realized I had/have and aptitude for fixing these and love it. I now run a 520 main machine, old 9 " Rockwell tablesaw PO put 520 rails on so table is expandable. I also run 2 minis- 1 saw station and one sanding station, a permanent drill press and a lathe made from 1 machines connected together- turning length is about 7 1/2 feet. I also run a Wood Master 6" jointer on a power stand but upgraded to 1 1/2 HP motor with correct pulleys to get speed of cutterhead close to 6000 RPM. I just purchased a ProPlaner and after I put fresh blades in will sell my original planer with hand crank instead of feed motor. Also a SS 20 inch standalone scroll saw. shop is 24X36- 24X24 is wood shop and 12X24 is old CJ Jeep shop. I repair/refurbish Shopsmiths in one end of garage. Currently bought several packages and once gone over will have some stuff to sell.

I don't have two ShopSmiths in my shop. My wife owns the other one and she has it set up with "her" lathe duplicator for the new railing spindles for the new upstairs railing she wanted. Although I seem to use "mine" much more often and sometimes I "borrow" hers too.

Let her design a piece of furniture and then make it the nicest piece of furniture she ever had. As you build it keep her involved and pretty soon the questions are more about the next project , how to build it and getting the materials for the project.
