Re: Model 500 carriage problem
It is a common c-clip.
Recently they are being called "E" clips.
It slips in to a groove in the square rod(165) and serves to retain the pinion gear(163).
P.S. "ACE" is de place.

Re: Model 500 carriage problem
Take the rod with you to Ace or Lowes, Home Depot etc.
Show them this picture and find the size you need to fit in the groove in the shaft and lock in place.

Re: Model 500 carriage problem
Without the clip all you are doing when turning the lock is pulling the rod out. It needs the clip to hold it to the back side to apply pressure to lock the pinion gears to hold your tool rest or table in place.

Re: Model 500 carriage problem
So I tried an eclip like Everett said and it was far too weak to hold the tool rest up and keep it from moving side to side. It even bent and almost broke

What size clip did you try? Important dimensions are the inner od of the shaft it goes on and the od of the clip itself(as well as the thickness).19manofgod92 wrote:So I tried an eclip like Everett said and it was far too weak to hold the tool rest up and keep it from moving side to side. This is also the sort of hardware that is easily manufactured by those who do "cheap". Go somewhere that sells to the trades rather than the general public. Avoid the "big box" for this sort of item.JPG wrote:What size clip did you try? I would seek out a machine shop and even then I would ask for the best.

Re: Model 500 carriage problem
Thanks guys! And I had a guy I know who works at a fastener company take the rod and fit it himself. Company called Valley Fastener and while I appreciate what he did, it’s entirely too weak for what I needed.

I would be interested in seeing pix of this.19manofgod92 wrote:Thanks guys! And I had a guy I know who works at a fastener company take the rod and fit it himself. Company called Valley Fastener and while I appreciate what he did, it’s entirely too weak for what I needed.
Is it perhaps due to some other thing not correct in the reassembly?
The mechanism is quite simple and not prone to either failure nor mis assembly. Are there perhaps other parts missing or not assembled correctly?
