Brass wedge locks

So far there is no improvement using the modification I did. Literally no difference at all in the likelihood that the wedge will get stuck, it gets stuck with the modified and unmodified wedge and they feel exactly the same. It's no better and no worse.

Two discoveries/conclusions I have made.

1. The wedge being out of round is a much worse detriment than I first believed. This causes the wedge to rock slightly in the bore, and dive down against the inside of the bore. It is not getting stuck on the bevel face necessarily, but rather inside of the bore and requires being tapped back "straight" to release. The only thing I can see fixing this would be a much longer rear wedge. The bolt is definitely long enough to accommodate a wedge up to 1/2" longer, but then the wedge could only be inserted into the carriage without the way tube in place, which wouldn't be desirable (I didn't check the headstock, but I think there's a lot more insertion room behind its bore).

2. The fact that the nut just slops around loose in the back of the rear wedge is a huge con. After inspecting these parts at great length I can see that being one of the major advantages to the brass wedges, that the brass is actually threaded.

I don't think there will be any satisfactory result other than wedge replacement at this point.

I'm really glad I started with the newer 10ER with the one piece wedge for my first. I think I would have been really frustrated by this design if I had started with this one, and had a much worse first experience with Shopsmith if this were the one I was doing a complete restoration on.

Thanks for the heads up. Funny thing is, a couple weeks ago I posted on that group that I was ISO the set and there was some discussion

I just messaged the seller. Was considering paying about $26 off eBay for 7/8" brass rod, so the asking price doesn't seem too far out of line.

I checked my normal source for all things metal (father in law) first. He didn't have 7/8 rod, but he said his preference would be to have me accurately measure the bores or bring the headstock to him so he could make them from brass stock to tighter tolerances.

I didn't think they necessarily needed to be tighter, as that might increase the chance of sticking (although a tighter tolerances seemingly would prevent the cast zinc ones from "rocking", or becoming out of round as easily).

At any rate, I should have the 10E originals in hand within a week. If I want to make a spare set off that sets measurements I can decide later.

That's surprising. Someone on here told me about the group, I sent the request, and was approved in less than ten minutes. I'd message them if I were you. It seems a worthwhile group to be a part of.

Also, the same guy rpd mentioned he bought from is who I'm getting this wedge set from. We messaged back and forth and he said he is slowly parting out a 10E. It might be worth it for you if your 10E needed any parts. Obviously if he had the brass locks it's an early one.
