Thankyou so very much, Everett for every bit of your caring and dedication to this history project. It is also very nice to hear of the wiling help you have received from the staff of Shopsmith Inc. in Dayton.

Your efforts have already been a great mental uplift for me (and maybe others) that have been a little depressed after reading past postings by some folks that have had, as they describe, less than satisfactory dealings with Shopsmith Inc., or have developed failing impressions of the company following some news releases.

I am sorry I am presently unable to be more active on this forum, but age and illness also must be dealt with. My Shopsmith tools are one of the very best things in my life, and reading about other's experiences in this forum is a way to learn and enjoy!

I agree November 15, 1947 must be the correct delivery date for those first 250 10E to Montgomery Ward stores.

As for the Mark 5 to Mark V on the Serial Number/Vent Plates the highest S/N I have seen (in pictures) with Mark 5 is SS 52108 from January 1980 and the lowest with Mark V SS 55582 from March 1980 so the change must have been made sometime between late January and early March 1980. When Shopsmith had the production by month in serial numbers listed it did not mention when the change took place.

Below is a Yuba Goldie Serial Number/Vent Plate from the one I restored.

That would be October 1960 according to the list.

Thanks for the Yuba vent plate. You restored Yuba Goldie Mark 5 368624 which was a 1960 machine with 3/4 HP motor.

I will go back to the original post where the others are and insert it with a notation to make it more fluid visually.

Their site at http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/toolhistory.htm "Shopsmith Mark V/Mark 7 Tool History" states: 1964 -- Was Temporarily Out of Production - The Magna America Corporation relocated and the Mark V went out of production.

I believe that Mark V is a typographical error reference and it should read Mark 5, since the first Mark V rolled of the assembly line March 20, 1973, a full nine (9) years later.

Shopsmith Inc. Significant Events registry states when the first Mark V rolled off the assembly line: March 20, 1973 and goes on to state 11 days later they had sold (not that they had manufactured) 1,940 Mark V units following its introduction.

Could I get a copy of the vent plates for the two you referenced in quote Mark 5 is SS 52108 from January 1980 and the lowest with Mark V SS 55582 from March 1980?

There is some speculation on the SS prefix use as some have suggested they brought it back to designate factory refurbished machines from another time period. I don't know enough yet to distinguish that. Haven't found anything yet but there is a lot missing in that 10 year void in serial numbers.

Let me explain my thoughts on these

Here I am referring to the chart of Serial Numbers by Month of Manufacture which previously was available on the Shopsmith website. MickyD and I both have versions where we filled in the blanks except 1961 to 1977. The Change from Mark 5 to Mark V I am referring to is when it changed on the Shopsmith Headstock's Serial Number/Vent Plate. Mark V had been used prior to that time in advertising making the use of Mark 5 and Mark V pretty much the same. Below are MickyD's and my versions.

This is the time frame I have narrowed it down to when the Serial Number/Vent Plate on the headstock changed from Mark 5 to Mark V. Below are the two Serial Number/Vent plates.

I believe the SS prefix for the Serial Numbers was Shopsmith Inc. way of making their serial numbers different than previous ones used. Remember SS Inc. restarted the serial numbers at SS1001 when they resumed production of the Mark 5 in 1973. The SS prefix continued until date coding replaced the serial numbers in December 1987.

As to the history page on the Shopsmith website there are a number of errors. Magna America (which should be Magna American) did not put the Mark 5 into production in 1953 but is the company that put it out of production in the 1960's. Magna America should be replaced with Magna Engineering Corporation. As to when Magna American went out of business is not clear. It occured sometime between 1963 and 1967 depending upon what you reference. Hopefully you now have in you possession some document that can give us an accurate date or at least year. The history page is more about what changed on the Mark 5/V over the years and not so much about who was making it when. Magna America and Shopsmith Inc. are the only to companies mentioned in the history. It would be nice to see Shopsmith correct it's history page.

I have only seen the front page of that document until now, Thanks Everett.

That Special Miter Gauge used the Mark 5 parts with a Model 10 bar to allow the use of the Safety Grip and the more accurate stop points (45-90-45) on the Model 10's. Since the Mark 5 sales started in 1954 the date on the document should be correct or at least very close. I have 2 of these Special Miter Gauges and they used the "Greenie" paint on them. One of the goals in going from the Model 10ER to the Mark 5 was to give Model 10 owners some upgrade abilities. This was one of them. Making the Special Brackets for using the SPT's was another. Most people do not realize the Mark 5 Shaper Fence fits the Model 10's table also, in fact the first manual for it shows it in use on a Model 10ER. See PDF Below
