I realize you are in the UK and your motor may be 220VAC

In the US most are 110VAC

The external Motor Start relays used on motors without an internal centrifugal motor start switch might resemble this configuration.

The Relay itself would be connected internally as I have drawn it with the overly of the schematic representation of coil and contacts below.

The GE relay I am most familiar with here is this type

The relay you mention is a DC relay, I presume mounted on a circuit board of sorts that provided the AC rectification of the AC to convert it to DC for the relay coil. Not having pictures to reference is a disadvantage.

I don't have much on UK Shopsmith info. Jacob Anderson might know more.

Realize that a start relay is not a typical relay. Coil sensitivity is calibrated to match the emf generated in the start winding when the motor is up to speed and the relay has a normally closed contact to disconnect the start winding from the power source(mains).

since we are discussing relays and their coil voltage AC VS DC ,, I was all ways taught as follows ,,

AC coils can be used with DC as long as you dont exceed the power rating of the coil.
