SS sharpening guide

Here is a post from a while back that covers using the belt sander for sharpening. I have tried several other systems including the Tormec and the belt sander always gives me the best results. I have never had any luck using the disc sander.

For me the sharpening guide plus disc sander combination is what I call The Shopsmith Chisel Shortening, Ruining and Temper Removal System.

I am lucky to have acquired a strip sander with the strip sander chisel sharpening guide, which is a whole different animal. Works quite well.

The Shopsmith strip sander belts go to 600 grit and you can also get a leather belt (third party) that runs on it. https://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/view ... 11#p182511

One could decrease that propensity by reducing the speed.

OK, after a second, more thorough look, I found the location of the plan for this guide. In the 1984 edition of PTWFE, which is the edition just before the current one, in the chapter called "Care and Maintenance", on page 334, Figure 20-31 shows the guide and details the dimensions. There is also a photo of the jig in use and on page 277 of the same edition there is another photo of it in use.

Perfect. Thank you for tracking that down. After going through my 4th edition, it looks like there is a lot of very valuable information that was left out from the previous editions. Any chance of getting a screen shot or more details about the second guide angle?

I do have a bench top 2x42 belt grinder that I mainly use for making wood handles and scale removal from forge work. The thought did cross my mind a few times to make a sharpening guide for it, but I really like the idea of using the disk sander for the bowl gouges. The person I was thinking of making this for doesn't have a belt grinder and is just about outta room for any more power tools, and I was thinking of making this as a matched set.

Not sure what the "second guide angle" might be, unless you are referring to the piece on the right side of the photo that James.Miller posted earlier in this thread. It looks like his photo is of a modified version of the jig shown in PTWFE , so maybe he can help with information on the function of that piece. I don't recall ever seeing anything like that.
