New to Turning - how to sharpen chisels?

I have a jack shaft on my er. I put a adjustable pulley on the motor and on the jack shaft so I could get variable speed settings.I used a plywood v with a hinge at the v. Had a thread rod at the open end to adjust the belt. The pulleys were thread so that one side could move in or out which resulted in the different speeds. I would have to check the sizes for sure but guessing the motor went from 1.5 to 2 or perhaps 2.5 The jack shaft was maybe 3 to 4 or 5. Worked pretty well.
Currently I am using it as disc sander.
For lighter bowls, you could try segmented ones. Avoids the major out of ballance issue-- unless you screw up aligning the rings )

Thanks. Yeah, I may need to switch my plans and start with segmented bowls first if I can't find a speed reducer. If I hadn't already ordered the speed reducer, I even thought about leaving the Mark V off and hooking up a Striatech DVR motor to the SPT shaft through a coupler. Of course, I would have to improvise some mounting brackets for it. $500 for a DVR to direct drive the SPT is way cheaper than $2k for a PowerPro.

I have a 10er so the jack shaft was easy, didn't realize that you had a mark v. The $500 for a DVR to direct drive the SPT That price sparked an interest in thinking about it for a 10er. But at my age it is not worth it. It would be interesting to see if striatech would sell directly. Watching the dvrplus install seems like it is almost a direct fit.

For a 10ER, why not do one of these variable DC motors? It is a bit cheaper than Striatech.

So, is everyone who is woodturning with a Shopsmith on this forum, doing it on a PowerPro? I ask because I have been searching for many, many months for a speed reducer with no luck. I have tried eBay and nationwide searches on Craigslist with no luck. I ordered a new one from Shopsmith but who knows how long it will take to complete the order since they are missing parts for it and reliant on someone who does it out of their garage in their spare time. I know speed reducers are rare and don't go on sale often, but I am finding it to be as rare or rarer than a unicorn...Any advice?

After many months of waiting, I finally have a brand new speed reducer from Shopsmith. Now that I have this, are there any recommendations for dust collection on a Shopsmith for lathe operation specifically for bowl turning? I saw a good setup from masonsailor2 on another thread ( https://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/view ... on#p256468) for holding a hose near the turning, but was wondering what other ideas people have come up with for this. I thought about getting a large square dust fitting and dropping between the waytubes underneath the bowl and with sufficient CFM this should work. However, I recently saw a picture of this online and it looked interesting. Any suggestions for dust collection while bowl turning on a Shopsmith?

That big canvas half pipe is an interesting concept. I’d prefer to have enough CFM to collect the chips at the source, but my shop vac isn’t strong enough. I haven’t turned anything since I got my big dust collector, so I don’t know if 1200 CFM with a hood will do the trick. I’ve been known to place a sheet-goods barrier behind the machine, and the canvas half pipe is certainly an improvement over that.

Yeah, dust collection is a big project that I need to do in my shop, but I haven't gotten to it yet. Using a Shopvac with a mini cyclone is a big step up from the DC3300 in my shop currently, but it is only a bandaid for me for now. That's why this idea of a canvas half pipe collector caught my eye. Of course with high CFM near the tool rest, maybe it isn't needed, but I don't have a DC with high CFM yet. Maybe this half pipe is a good solution for those of us that don't have a big dust collector in the shop yet.

The problem is where the waste goes, that being towards you and down, very little goes back. So putting a lot of effort in to making a large deflector may not get you much for your effort.
