10ER Table Carriage

Post by jsburger »

Does anyone know anything about this carriage? In all my many many years of watching eBay daily I have never seen one like that. At least I don't remember if I ever did.

Larry, please tell us what the serial number is.

Picked it up at a pawn shop in Mountain Home, Arkansas by way of Ebay if I remember correctly. Pics are the day I got it home and unloaded. I think I found the PO name in Skip's list but not sure I read the spread sheet right. This one has the thinner? waytubes, the table tubes are hollow, the headrest is the two bolt style and seems much lighter than the four bolt style. The carriage is different. Of course I didn't know any of this when I got it, I just knew I had a 10ER :D :D :D

ps I saw the serial number on Larry's, so I went up to the shop and checked my #3 (Serial #94987, currently awaiting re-assembly), and it too has that later style carriage. I hadn't noticed that before.

Hi John,
It is the third version of the carriage. I call it the light weight version. The first two I am sure you are familiar with. The original was the double wedge lock and the second was the single wedge lock. This one came out on the later Model 10ER around the same time as the 1/8" thick way tubes. Hollow table tubes and the last version, which is 7, of the headstock with the access hole behind the nameplate had already come out. The latest Model 10ER I have had is serial number 76928 which had the hollow table tubes and version 7 of the headstock. I have yet to own a 10ER that came with this carriage or thin wall way tubes. It is these changes that make the question How Much Does a Model 10E or 10ER Weigh hard to answer.

Looking at the pictures of Larry's 10ER it appears his has these later changes. Of interest though his does not have the last version of the tailstock. Notice the rib down the center of his but the last version (number 4) no longer has that rib as seen in the picture below.

That may not be the original tailstock. I had bought an extra to be able to mount extension tables on both ends. I'll check later.
Oops, should have looked at my own pictures, the tailstock shown is how I got it. I'll still look to see if my extra has the rib.

Thanks Ron and Russ. I knew you would have the explanation. I still can't believe that in 15+ years of watching eBay daily then I have never seen one.

Is responding to my own post the same as talking to myself   Anyway I do have the smooth sided tailstock but it was probably the one I bought as an extra. It is visible in one of my other post about the UTR.

Talking to oneself is fine, as is arguing with oneself. It is only when you are losing arguments with yourself that you need start to worry. ;)

John you said

I have one I bought from ebay a while (less than 15 years) back. Some things escape our notice on ebay like small differences in a familiar item.
