So true. I never think of there being two versions of the other carriage because they look identical. You can't see the difference in the locks unless you really look.

I had to go downstairs and look at my 10-ER to see the carriage. It does not have what Russ referred to as the light weight carriage. If you could see how much crap was sitting in front of my 10-ER you would understand why I didn't try to see if it was a single wedge lock or a double wedge lock.
As it was I had to slip around one end and reach to feel the bottom of the carriage.
I couldn't find my note showing the serial number so I had to hang from the ceiling joist with my toes and hold my phone down near the plate to snap a close picture of it. For the record it was serial # 50306...
It has the thick way tubes.
It has the solid table rods.
And... it has waaay too much crap sitting in front of it.
I have the tail-stock, extension table and the belt guard but no blade guard. Of course I also have the fence, miter-gauge and blade / arbor.

I swear that I recently saw a serial number / year chart but can't find it now. I was looking on Everett's Drive pages but I didn't see one there.

I am kind of excited about making this 10-ER lean toward a dedicated lathe. I've not done much turning for some time but really want to get back to it.

By the serial number it looks like it would have Headstock version 5. Does your have an E or R before the number? I have had S/N R50474 (restored & resold) which has double wedge quill and way tube locks with the keyed quill lock, wide (approx. 3/8") cast on blocks for quill return spring housing. This was shown in the 0151 Owner’s Manual. If yours has single locks it would be Headstock version 6 which is first shown in the 0451 Owner's Manual. The East and West Coast serial numbers with the E or R in front of the number didn't appear to run evenly. From what I have found the "E" serial number ran ahead of the "R" serial numbers. With that in mind if yours has double wedge quill and way tube locks with the keyed quill lock, narrow (approx. 3/16") cast on blocks for quill return spring housing it is version 4 of the headstock. I have been trying to compare changes in the machines, ie. headstock versions, with manuals and other information to try to put date ranges to the serial numbers but it is a difficult task. early manuals had no dates on them. Headstocks have the serial number on them and rarely get changed but other parts do. As an example, Magna offered the Metal Extension Table upgrade when they changed from the Wood Extension Table so it is hard to put a serial number to this change. Plus all this happened over 65 years ago.

I neglected to include the ER serial number prefix when talking about the East and West plants. The East plant used the prefix E than ER than back to E. I am not sure why the ER prefix was used but speculation has it as "Eastern Revised". With all the information Everett has he may find out the real meanings of the use of the serial number prefixes E, ER and R. Just a bit before serial number 70,000 all serial number discontinued having the letter prefix for both the East and West plants.

Looking at my list you should have either one of the last version 4 headstocks or one of the first version 5 headstocks. Looking at the quill return spring housing for the narrow or wide cast on blocks will tell. This may also put your 10ER being made in late 1950 if it is version 4.

The two Indexed Quill Return Spring Housings are shown below. The one on the left goes on Headstock Version 5 and later. The one on the right fits Headstock Version 4 or earlier. Remember there is a plain spring housing in aluminum or steel that is on the earlier 10E machines.
