Workbench finally, maybe

Saw this from carbonman today, http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/viewt ... 03#p259103 and noticed the vise.

I have one of these, NOS, :D Columbian vise, purchased in 1978 from Lowes and unboxed Tuesday. Update time frame, most likely 1990-1995. I was working out of town in Monroe, La when I bought it. Time flies :o :o

I have a 30x72x1-3/4 maple top that is NOS from Grainger that I got for $50 at least 20 years ago, no pic. And a steel bench free from my brother last Saturday.

I guess it's time to put them together :o :rolleyes: :)At this rate I'll never wear them out. :)

Mounting the vise to that 'old arn' will be interesting unless the 'top' overhangs. ;)

Surprised to see that anyone even looks at my posts.
That vise is about 60yrs old.
When I built the new bench top I was going to install my Record vise....
but decided I really liked this one much better.
That release is much easier to use than the quick release handle on the Record vise.
No idea how many projects /fixes have been through this vise over the years. It operates just like brand new.

Progress. Not done but closer. The bench I'm replacing is an old 24x72 base cabinet store fixture, all particle board(heavy) with laminate and an old 36x84 solid core door for the top. I mounted a Pittsburgh vise to it.

Finally, my progress as of today. NOS maple top, Yost front vise,Columbian end vise, mounted to the steel bench my brother gave me. Still have to trim the side boards level to the maple top and drill the bench dog holes. Any suggestions for a finish? I don't think I want it too slick.

Its been a while, I think I used Tung oil (or something similar) on mine.

Linseed oil comes to mind.

A little more progress, two coats of linseed oil and 1 coat of Johnson's wax. I may not have let the linseed oil cure long enough, the wax seems a little sticky and can still smell the oil. Also added the leather and added wheels.
