7 digit serial number

Hello new member here. I'm trying to figure out what machine I have
To get some missing parts everything I have found on serial numbers
Stop at a 6 digit number. I have one with 7 digits. I always have to be
Different it seems. 2840169 is the number If anyone has any info to share on what model
It is and how old it would be greatly appreciated

Six digit ser numbers are probably date codes. Others predate the date code system and can be found at the Shopsmitrh corporate site www.shopsmith.com

Like you, I don't see any 7 digit numbers listed.

You can easily identify your machine by appearance. The color and design of it will tell you what you have. It won't tell you what year it was built, but that isn't important to get parts for it or to use it.

If you post pictures, someone will tell you what it is.

First, a picture would be of great help in identifying what you have and why a 7 digit Serial Number. The Shopsmith and related tools, as far as I have found, only go up to a 6 digit number with some having letter prefixes. The Model 10E and 10ER, the original Shopsmith tool, started at 1001 for production units and went up over 100,000. Some had a letter prefix of either E, ER or R. The Mark 5, first for sale in March of 1954 started around 260,000 and ended around 383,000 when it went out of production in 1964. We do not know the actual starting and ending serial numbers for this time period but 137,156 Mark 5's were sold. These Mark 5's were first Green/Silver than Gold/Copper and finally Gray. In 1973 when the Mark 5 was back in production under the newly formed Shopsmith Inc. the serial numbers started with SS1001. These were also Gray in color. The Mark 5 changed to Mark V in early 1980. Prior to the change to Date Coding in December 1987 the last Serial Number for the Mark V 500 was around SS222,500. There are other Shopsmith/Magna tools which is why posting a picture would help.

I'm wondering. Could we be talking about a clone? That might explain the unfamiliar 7-digit serial number.

The answer is yes.

Over the years the Shopsmith Mark V has been copied and sold as a cheaper alternative to the Real Shopsmith Mark V. Some of these tools have a label on the base part (where the machine hinge is to put it in drill press mode) with the product’s Information and serial number. See the example in the picture below. On a real Shopsmith Mark V this information is on the belt cover vent plate and on newer machines the serial # and model # are on an additional sticker on the belt cover. This plate, and sticker on newer machines, will say Mark V, or Mark 5 on machines made before early 1980, and have the company name that made it. The company names (newest to oldest) are RLF Brands LLC, RLF Shop LLC, Shopsmith Inc., Magna American Corporation, Yuba Power Products, Magna Power Tool Corporation or Magna Engineering Corporation. The “Clones” some of which are made in China or Taiwan, have different names like Total Shop, Wood Master, PHD 500, Central Machinery and others. Because they are copies of the real Shopsmith Mark V some parts may be interchangeable, many are not. Shopsmith has fought in court and won against companies making these “Clone” machines but many used machines are still out there. My advice for anyone wanting to buy a used Shopsmith Tool or part check to see you are getting a Real Shopsmith item. Remember Shopsmith repair or replacement parts if needed are still available from the manufacturer but not parts for clones.

The serial number is on that cover plate but nothing anyplace else
