Capacitors do die, but usually a dead start capacitor makes the motor hum but fail to spin. When that happens, you can spin the motor up by hand and it will run normally until it is stopped.
I would inspect the centrifugal switch before repacing anything.

The other end of the switch is more meaningful since you stated L1-L1 and L2-L2 BOTH(?) switched correctly. However it doing 'nothing' contradicts that(it should HUM when turned for or rev).

The terminals on the other end of the switch do the forward/reverse switching for the start circuit.


BTW do be careful handling those wires that have brittle insulation.

Dusty, thanks for the info. I was hoping it would be the Cap. Now the burning question is where can I get one. We have a Lowes and Home Depot, but that is about it. Do you have any suggestions as to where I could get one online ? Or what the specs on the capacitor are??

Where do you live? Many parts of the world have electric motor repair shops. In the US, it should be fairly easy to find a shop that has parts and knowledge to repair motors. I live in a small city and we have a motor shop here, so the more populous places should also have them.

If you take the old part to a motor shop, they can hand you a correct replacement. If you mess around with ordering parts, it falls on you to know what you need before ordering.

Pull up Google search. Type in "electric motor repair, (your city). That should get you a list of repair shops. If you live in Tehran, New York city, or Los Angeles, you might strike out. If you live where people still fix things, you should get the name of a local shop.

Garys, that sounds like the best idea of all. I live in Sandusky, Ohio on the shores of lake Erie and we do indeed have a motor repair shop. I have never used them but sure will give it a try. Thanks

Well, folks. The motor repair shop took that motor all apart and everything tested out OK except for the winding in the motor itself. I was told the motor was 53 years old and it was definitely not worth repairing. Everettdavis said he knew someone that had a motor, I sure could use that info now. Thanks.

Old motors can be rewound, but usually smaller motors will cost you much more to rewind and repair than they are worth. All you can do now is start searching for a better one.

Well, Simon*e could not rebuild my motor nor did he have one for sale. Does anyone else out there know where I could buy a used motor? It is Model C48L2A10 SN C66 1.125 HP, 3450 RPM .
