About a month and a half ago while looking through my local classified I found a Shopsmith for $25. The owner told me the motor still worked, but everything was stuck, seized or rusted. Option one, make a dedicated shorty drill press (modeled after the one made by jsburger) Option two, one of my Shopsmith’s has some dents in one of its legs, worse case scenario I could salvage a leg.
When I got it home and started to disassemble the machine it proved to be a little bit of a challenge. One of the way tubes was bent making removal of the carriage and headstock a little tricky. Fortunately both of the bench tubes were straight and with a little bit of effort I figured they could become way tubes. From the good way tube or the ends of the bent way tube I figured I could make a reasonable shorty bench tube.
I have always like the gold and brown color so I now have a 1973-78 Goldie.

Very nice! Considering the condition when you started, also an incredible amount of work in a short period of time. Well done and I'm sure it will be a handy addition to your collection.

The only thing better than three Shopsmiths is four ... at least that’s what I keep telling my wife. My middle son likes woodworking so I told him he could have one of them when he has a place to put it.
