set screw problem again

set screw problem again
Was using my gear with the jointer in place and doing table saw operation and had both the set screws on the saw blade and on the jointer drive hub come loose. The jointer suddenly bogged down while making a cut and I found the saw blade arbor set screw loose. I did find nylok set screws on line but I will have to buy 100 pcs at $40 plus for a few screws. Does anyone have a source for these type of screws?

I just use blue loctite.

Blue loctite will work but on the sawblade arbors and the drill chuck the screw is continually removed and replaced. Don't know of blue loctite would survive continual loosening and tightening. I once made a locking set screw by drilling a hole through the screw body and forcing a piece of weed whacker string through the hole and cutting it flush. It seemed to work but I lost it when I sold an extra sanding disc to a friend. Guess I will have to make some more. This seems to be a bye product of the Power Pro speed regulation.

Loctite seems to hold up for me. None have failed to hold, yet. If a set screw ever does becomes loose, I'll just coat it again.

Regarding Bill V's suggestion that this may be a byproduct of Power Pro speed regulation, what is the theory? I'd like to get a PP at some point so I'm trying to understand what to expect. Is the thinking that it is pulsing power/torque to control speed and creating some kind of rotational jitter effect? Are there any other negative observations based on speed regulation?

That was the theory some time ago in a previous thread. When I first got my PP I heard a jingling noise like keys in my pocket and tracked the noise to loose hubs on the the left side of the headstock. I also found that the set screw that holds the pulley on the DVR motor shaft was also loose. After I tightened that screw and used the machine some more the set screw came loose again and fell into the motor pan and was almost lost in the sawdust. I used blue Loctite at that time. I don't think it came loose again but I have never checked it again.
It is my opinion that the pulsing of the motor speed is causing the screws to loosen. I don't know what the frequency is that the motor pulses at but I would think that the frequency would have to vary with the spindle speed. I will try to bring that thread forward again probably after the Holy Days.

Sorry, I forgot about this potential issue with the PowerPro. Yeah, I think I remember reading a thread a while back wondering about vibration issues from the PowerPro causing setscrews to come lose. The PowerPro is a switched reluctance motor as I understand it. I am no expert on them, but just doing a quick search, I found the article at the link below. They state that a switched reluctance motor "suffers from inherent vibration and acoustic noise". The former being the most likely cause for the setscrews coming lose as you mention. The latter most likely being the cause of the PowerPro noise that Shawn complained about in another thread recently. For the vibration, I am not sure that Shopsmith would have an answer, but I would expect that Striatech is at least aware of the issue and perhaps has a fix or suggestion. With proper engineering, it should be possible to calculate the vibration modes and natural frequencies of vibration of the PowerPro (as pointed out in this paper); and ideally minimize any of them that might induce setscrews or other hardware to come lose. It might be worth bugging Striatech regarding this issue, if Shopsmith won't address it. This has to be an annoying problem to have to deal with...

Just read the first part of the paper you referenced and I am convinced that the response time speed of the regulator to control the speed would need to be modified to slow the reaction time of the speed controller. I think that this would soften the impact of the rapid on/off switching and the resulting vibration. Much of the applications of the SRM motors are in machines that run at a relatively constant speed. An example would be a drill press. Once the drill bit is engaged in the stock, load variance is, I believe, at a minimum. Cutting many small pieces as I do for segmented turning would vary the load considerably. I am not as educated as you seem to be in electrical theory But I was wondering if SS would consider redesigning the coupler shaft to include a coil spring mounted axially inside the tube to absorb the rotational forces. Just a WAG. ( wild a$$ guess)
