Make and Model of older Shopsmith

Serial # 262501 bought this the other day for really cheap I am in the middle of restoration of this piece of machinery . Just need a little info so i know what parts i need to order.

You got me on this one. I can not make that serial number fir into any of the numbering schemes that I am aware of. It might be a very early model (1954). You just might have a real jewel!! I'll be watching to see how others respond.

A couple questions. What color is it? What are the dimensions of the main table? What size motor does it have?

Can you post a photo?

The Mark V was introduced in 1953. The original model Mark V is what is often referred to as the Mark V model 500. It has the smaller worktable and extension table. Based on the serial number, I would guess that your machine was built in March of 1954. The headstock's original paint color scheme should have been a green and silver, though it could be purple and orange now. The nice folks at Shopsmith will be able to help you with specific parts.

Is this a model 10e or 10er?

the model is a mark V it has really short legs on it and is all silver castings as far as I can tell. Also what is the best way to refurbish the tubes ? they have alot of surface rust on them?

I went to the hardware store and bought 150 grit Emery paper. I then tore it into 1 inch wide strips. I then wrapped it around the tube and pulled back and forth. It was impressive with the ease of use.

i clean tubes by using a three jaw machinists type chuck on a shopsmith. not the one that i'm restoring at the time. i spin them at about 1,000 rpm and polish with 240 grit emery cloth. another way that i have yet to try is with a potato. see:

Dad got two 10E's but we don't know the year and we need a lathe tool rest, do you guys recognize the serial numbers?

if possible some pictures of the tool and the serial number plate may be helpful in identifying it.

For the tubes I use scotch bright (gold then red) and a lathe to spin them (about 250rpm) then I finished them with some 600 grit emery cloth strips. this takes a little time. I did two bench tubes and two way tubes in about two and a half hours while working on this one.
