Fence Wingnut

I have a mid 80's 510, and the wingnut on the fence keeps coming loose and spins off of the threaded rod, leaving the fence locked to the rails.

I would like to use a locking nut on the threaded shaft to lock the wingnut in place but I cant find any to fit the thread pattern which ShopSmith used. Alternatively, I believe that I could use a thread locking compound to lock the wingnut to the shaft.

Does anyone have a suggestion for the best way to prevent the wingnut from coming loose?

I do believe that the "wing Nut" is supposed to be attached to the threaded shaft with a rollpin.

Shopsmith Catalog item #240, P/N 514384. If this info is correct, any appropriately sized roll pin would work.

That would be a great design, but on my fence, neither the nut nor the threaded shaft are drilled with a hole for a roll pin. The design on the parts diagram looks like an improved design. Thanks for the help

You can try a little of the removable Loctite on the shaft. It might be easier than drilling it yourself for a rollpin.

I have a 510 fence that I have parted out but I have the part you need if it will fit your version. I'll get a picture later and if you are interested I could send it off to you.

Problem is I'm not sure how you get it out. Anyone know how to get the bit off the end (see green arrow).

I believe that you are right. If the threads were clean, I believe that it might run out the inside. HOWEVER, ......I tried that and it did not work. I then put a drill bit in the roll pin hole (for leverage) and was able to screw it in further but not all the way. It aooears that the threads have been gummed up somehow to prevent this.

Running a tap down on the threads (where the wing nut would be) might clear it up. I don't have a tap that size so I am unable to confirm the theory.

A die might work more gooder.

[Yes, absolutely but even then I don't have the right size die and trying to use a nut to chase the threads did not work either]

Didn't have time to work on this today so stay tuned for what might happen tomorrow. I drive the pin and and take the handle off and see if mine will screw through. As you might have guessed I've not tried to take this area apart before.

I do have a tap and die set so it is possible I have the right parts to clean up the threads if needed.
