Table Tube Locking Knobs

Post by dusty »

I few days ago someone here on the forum posted some photos that showed 520 table rails. It appeared that maybe Shopsmith has made a change. A change that I should have made long ago because I have always been dissatisfied with what I have.

To the point: Are these the knobs that are now on the newer 520 tables?

Dusty,

I just upgraded a 505/510 Main Table and Extension Table to 520/M7. Below is the knobs I received from SS. They are the same as most of the Knobs I have on 520/M7 Tables already. I couldn't find the right size locally, darn Covid19.

Thank you, Russ. These are what I had seen. I can probably find these in the SS online catalog BUT would you please provide me with the part number. I don't want to order new ones only to get more of what I have.

Dusty,

They are P/N 515859 Knob with Stud and are the minimum SS price of $4.95. The springs are P/N 518462 Spring for Tables M7, 520 and $4.95 if you need them also. I could not find anything close to replace the those springs locally here either.

I should have added a picture of the other knobs I have on my 520 tables but I didn't even look at them yesterday when I took the previous picture. Below is a picture of the plastic knobs that came on my November 2001 Mark V 520. It is a full set on the Main, Extension and 2 Floating Tables.

They look the same as the one in the picture you posted although I cannot tell for sure what that knob material is. The knob part on mine are black plastic, like the current ones.

I broke one of my nice rounded knobs and order a replacement and spare from Shopsmith. They sent the newer star knobs.

For me this new knob is a pain to use. Yes a real pain. Arthritis in my thumbs bothers when I use it. I swapped it to a less used extension table so I could have the "nicer" knobs on the main table.

I have not found a replacement but then I haven't spent the time but I wish I had all of the older style. If I ever do find one I get a half dozen so I will have replacements for the rest of my life, the kids, well they will be on their own....

It should be fairly easy to find knobs in the style you prefer as the stud is 1/4-20 x 3/4". The 3/4 inch conical compression springs on the other hand, may have to be a special order from a fastener store.
