what's the spindle knob for?

Again, picture(s). The mark from where the collar was originally tightened should be on a flat and therefore not possibly restricting reinstallation. And no it need not be 'persuaded' to go on.

P.S. It may be time to measure the shaft od and the knob bore id. Brushing the id may have created some surface 'mountains'.

I must be loosing my mind. I apologize. I got home from work and came straight into my garage to take pictures and measure and for the last 2 hours I have been searching for my spindle collar or whatever it’s called. I can’t believe I cannot find it anywhere. I’m convinced that someone must have broken into my house while I was at work, came into my garage and stole it! Lol. I swear I left it right here on my work bench! Ugh. I guess I’m just going to have to order another one. The spindle and other end pieces all measured 5-8”. I’m sure that when I wire brushed the inside of it to clean it up I created a bunch of tiny mountains and a little sand paper would have done the trick. However, now I have to wait for parts

Ok. I’m officially screwed. I guess SS doesn’t sell this part??? The one part out of thousands that They don’t sell and I manage to lose it. Omg!

In addition to my missing spindle collar, when tapping in the bearings that the belt goes on on the opposite side of where the quill extends, the new part they sent me seemed “cheaper” than the original which was black and had a set screw in the middle part that has the grooves that the belt goes on. The new one seems to be aluminum and no set screw. After installing the washer on the end, I now have about 1/8” of play in it and I can pull it back and forth. I paid over $100 for this part. Did I mention that one of the bearings slipped off of it? Looks like I’m going to have to remove it again and reinstall the bearings properly. I’m actually thinking about just replacing the bearing that was bad on the original one which was the reason I ordered the new one

Actually, now that I’m looking at it more, it will actually slide into the main housing quite a bit.

It’s called the drive sleeve assembly by the way. I suppose that the tension from the spring in the quill feed will keep the drive sleeve assembly pushed up against the lock washer. Is this the design?

Now about the drive sleeve. There should be two weird retaining rings. One in the front end and the more obvious one at the rear. How did you get the original drive sleeve out without removing the rear one? What is this about a lock washer????
