Has anyone used Shopsmith Dado to build drawers this way?

Yes! That is what I use. Have done 24 drawers using this method and it has worked well for me. First saw it on Woodsmith Shop. Easy setup and strong joints.

Thank You.

I am thinking I will try this and maybe scale it up to 3/4 Baltic Birch from 1/2” using 3/8 - 3/8 - 3/8 for 3/4” for some drawers holding heavier materials.

The ratio would still be half the stock thickness.

Very helpful. Thanks for the pictures

I have used the joint but it was never done like this. This is brilliant. I need to go make some boxes.

What do you do with the exposed ply edge on the right hand side ? Veneer?

You attach a 'pretty' front.

I've done this and it works.

I would like to make a comment about the video, however. If you watch carefully, he cuts the dados on the ends of the long sides of the drawers by using the miter gauge to push the work piece through the cut while keeping the end of the work piece in contact with the rip fence.

If you watch carefully, as he pushes those cuts through, the back edge of the work piece begins to pull away from the rip fence which means the work piece is beginning to rotate, which is a sign that he's getting dangerously close to a kickback; at a minimum he's introducing an error in the parallelism of the dado. Just be darn careful if you do that.

The better practice is to use a spacer against the fence that ends before the work piece touches the blade. I understand why he isn't doing that; he wants to keep his 1/4" set up for the vertical cuts he will later make.

This is a small table I finished about a month ago where I used these joints for the drawers.
