In this time-lapse video, Nick shows how to make a deer with just a few quick cuts on a band saw. It’s a handy technique called “compound cutting” and it can be used to make all sorts of three-dimensional shapes. These particular reindeer are sized so you can cut them from scraps of 2x4s. Or, glue up blocks from different species of scrapwood. If you’ve seen our time-lapse video on making herringbone cutting boards and you’d like to make your own, then this video is for you. Nick explains his technique in detail, including the simple math you need to design your own cutting boards. He shows five different herringbone patterns as examples, and then walks you through each step as he builds one of them. This tutorial takes some time, but there are plenty of tips and useful jigs to see along the way.

The reason this small box is (almost) impossible to open is that it doesn’t open like a box.
There are no hinges, no lids, no latches – nothing you’d expect.
You have to hold the box in your hands just right and…well, you have to watch the video to see how the box opens.
Nick will also show you how it’s made.

Well, here it is again at a regular pace, allowing Nick to explain each step in detail for those of you who would like to make your own.
Specifically, he spends a good deal of time explaining the “notch jig” he invented and how to use it to create the delicate lattice that enables the soap savers to save soap.

I have to admit that while I was impressed with Nick's approach to this project, I don't see the value of the product itself. My adult kids have made it clear to me that they and their generation think that bars of soap are disgusting and are just another antiquated thing that us old people use and do, like wearing wrist watches, having landlines and taking pictures of people other than ourselves and our food!

Yeah, I can see your point. I enjoyed Nick's video, but I also wondered while watching it whether it would be as applicable today or not. I prefer bar soap myself, but I am sure I am in the minority. Antibacterial soaps aren't healthy and I am allergic to most liquid soaps, but those seem to be popular.
