pro-planer issue

Hi all,
Apologies ahead of time for the vague description of the problem.
I picked up a used pro-planer (standalone) a few years back, it appears to be in decent shape, but I don't know its history. I've lightly used it off and on the past few years without issue. Today was my first time planing rough-sawn stock, white oak, if it matters, taking lite passes. The first few boards went great, but then there was a noticeable change in the sound/pitch. Turned it off, inspected things, and didn't see anything obvious. Put the board back through, the sound was awful and the board came out with noticeable knife marks, almost gouges, in it and it was not feeding through smoothly.

This may or may not be related, but after shutting things back down, I noticed this part on the shelf below the planer. It's about an inch long, 1/8 or so in diameter and looks like it may have had a set screw tightened against it. I looked at the exploded parts diagram but nothing stands out.

It have a 'flat'(full length)?

I think examining what may be now 'loose' in either the table or the cutter head is where the cause may be. I do not think that pin came from the PP.

The picture isn't the greatest, the piece is rectangular shaped, all "flat". Toward one end, it's tough to tell if it is slightly shaped or been deformed.
I'll put that aside for now and check the cutter and table. Any suggestions on what to look for?

Something loose that should not move.

How deep are those 'gouges'?

Are they full width or favor one side or ??????

Could a blade be loose?

Could that 'pin' be a "key" off the motor shaft/pulley? OR cutter pulley.

You got it! It's the "key" off of the cutter pulley. Now to order a new one and try to get the "key holes" lined back up.

The noticeable knife marks, almost gouges, and noise was likely the pulley slipping on the cutter shaft after the key came out. A new key can either be ordered from SS or check you local hardware store.

Thanks, I ordered one from Shopsmith this morning.
It was my first time calling rather than ordering online. What a pleasant surprise to get someone on the phone who knows the product rather than getting a random person in a call center.

You can obtain 1/8" key stock at Ace . . . and cut it to length.

That's good to know. I might take a ride this weekend and see if I can get back up and running.

Well.. I received a new key, but it won't stay in place. Best I can tell, the set screw isn't seating deep enough to lock the key in place. The threads on the pulley do look worn and the set screw only goes in so far.

I'm probably just going to pick up a new pulley and move on, but got to wondering.. I found the mounting clamps in a box of parts that came with my Mark V and the cutter shaft has evidence that it had a hub mounted to it at one point.

Tempted to unbolt it from the stand and give it a go. Other than convenience (or inconvenience) of having to mount/unmount it, are there advantages to Mark V mounted vs stand-alone.
